Product Description

Product Description
Internationally recognised coach and best-selling author Joe Friel teams up with ultra-endurance guru Gordon Byrn in this second edition of the most comprehensive guide to racing Ironman-distance triathlons ever written. Combining science with personal experience, Friel and Byrn prepare every triathlete, from the working age-grouper to the podium contender, for success in triathlon's ultimate endurance event. Since the publication of the first edition of "Going Long", registration numbers for Ironman-distance races have soared. Every year, tens of thousands of additional triathletes commit to the sport's greatest challenge. This new second edition embraces this growing group of triathletes who are juggling training, family time and full-time jobs. Sport-specific chapters outline the stages of development for each of the three disciplines of triathlon and describe drills to improve form and efficiency. A newly expanded section on training the mind explores the all-important psychological aspects of racing, including goal-setting and visualisation. A detailed appendix includes key training sessions, workout examples, and strength training progressions. "Going Long" has long been the best-selling book on the subject of training for the Ironman. With expanded content and a new, two-colour format, this second edition is sure to reaffirm its reputation as the premier sourcebook among triathletes who are serious about succeeding in the Ironman-distance.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only this was out when I started Ironman, 9 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Looking at it objectively, Ironman Triathlon is insane. 2.4miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling and then a marathon? Tell anyone that you are going to do it, and they'll tell you you're insane. But to complete an Ironman, first you've got to have passion and dedication. They will get you to the start line, and if you are lucky you'll make it to the finish line too.
This book, written by the guru of triathlon training, is based on years of experience and presents the science and art of ironman training in a logical and easy to follow format. It covers everything: training, equipment, psychology and (most importantly) nutrition.
Most people who do Ironman don't have the luxury of a personal coach. Get this book, and you'll have Joe Friel as your personal coach. Not only will your chances of becoming an Ironman go through the roof, but you'll probably amaze yourself with your result.
For those Ironman veterans, this is an excellent source of yet more information. And it's something you'll want to keep dipping into

5.0 out of 5 stars Great information for an ironman newbie, 19 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This is a great book for those people, like myself, that were slightly daunted by trying to achieve the distance. It takes you through the most important areas that a newbie should aim to achieve first to ensure a finish and then (now I'm going for my second one) how to go about moving forward to a target time. I'm also sure that for those of you looking to qualify for Hawaii it has all the right stuff in their for you too.

One of the best sections is the description of how you are likely to feel at differenct sections of the race, such as mile 60-80 on the bike etc. It allows you to, within reason, get your head around what your day is going to be like - other than long ;)

If you're willing to commit to doing an ironman then i recommend forking out £10 for this as it'll repay itself easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for budding ironmen (and women), 30 Oct 2005
By phil (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
If you're thinking of doing an ironman this is an invaluable guide. It guides you through every aspect of planning, training and finishing your first (and subsequent!) ironman race. The sample training plans are very useful in giving you an idea of the volume and type of training you need to do. Importantly stresses the pointlessness/danger of doing too much running. The author also offers a "contact me" facility. I thought "yeah right", but tried it and got a prompt and useful response. Probably the best piece of kit you'll buy.
