A great first novel 25 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
From start to end, I loved this. With brilliant main characters and a superb supporting cast, this tale of Lizzy Walters, her family home (Keeper House), her ex boyfriend (David) and her family - had me laughing out loud in parts and nodding my head in sympathy in others. Its as much a story about family secrets and lies as it is about Lizzy and her boyfriend, and I found both stories as entertaining as each other. The story begins with the whole Walters clan enjoying their Christmas break at Keeper House and ends with a summer wedding, and the time in between is spread between Lizzys London life (her job and shag buddy Jaden), the lives of her family back home at Keeper House (cousins, aunts and uncles) and the secrets they are all hiding. Its not a taxing read, although it does have a fair few twists and turns, but its beautifully written and I ended up feeling all warm and peaceful by the final page.

When the going gets tough Lizzy Walters goes home.Home to her parents enchanting house in the country that her family have lived in for generations. With her cheating ex David,Jaden from work and Mile's David's brother all fighting over her Lizzy thinks its a good as time as any to go home and gather her thoughts and figure out what she wants. But when she returns home for Christmas her parents reveal that they have to sell there beloved house, but why? and with no where to run to anymore Lizzy will have to face her problems head on and figure out what she really wants.Soon enough secrets are revealed and Lizzy's left wondering if all is as it seems with David and her family.I loved this debut from Harriet Evans. After hearing mixed reviews for this book I wasn't to sure what to expect but I liked the sound of it and it was £3.89 in Tesco so I thought I'd give it a try and I'm so glad I did. This book is so funny I love the way Harriet writes.I've just ordered her other two novels A Hopeless Romantic and The Love of Her Life and can't wait to read them.Buy this book and enjoy!

Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed reading the early part of this - the descriptions of home (although Lizzy's home is not your average!) and what home represents to Lizzy felt very truthful. In the latter part of the book, the plot seemed to be strung together like something written on the back of a hanky. There was so little honesty in the book - between any of the characters or in the family - and that was the underlying factor in every single event. This inability to communicate at all is wrapped up in a cosy, upper middle class world that makes it just 'silly old Lizzy and her madcap family'. I missed seeing Lizzy grow up or have any self-awareness and any of the other characters develop in a real way. It is like an old-fashioned Mills and Boon dressed up in modern clothing. It was the Acknowledgements at the end which topped it off for me - 'you are beautiful', 'big love', 'big hug' - that made me feel the whole book was a self-indulgent load of twaddle!

Disappointing

fun - but had more holes than a cheap colander
I liked this, I really did. It's fun and frothy and extremely old fashioned. It's based around what feels like a 1920s home and family; full of eccentric characters, nicknames, old... Read more

Judging a book by its cover
This novel, following the turbulent romantic life of Lizzy and the even more turbulent lives of her extended family, is glorious escapism. Read more
