At last, an anthology of the solo material of one of the finest song writers of our time and something to take away the disappointment of the cancelled Jazz Cafe concert ( And thanks Amazon for the release-day delivery ). Thirty-four tracks are included in this collection, basically covering the period between 1973 and 1983, and soul music does not come any finer!! For me, just having a copy of "Shout About It" and "You Oughta Be In Pictures" after all these years was worth the purchase price, but it's even better than that! Songs like "Trying To Hold On To My Woman", "If You Don't Want To Be In My Life", "Can't Get Off Until The Feeling Stops" and many others go straight into the classic category. Like listening to classic Bobby Womack, these tracks will send shivers down your spine. This is real soul and it doesn't get much better than this.

An Unexpected Treat 30 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
I've been buying Lamont's stuff - on vinyl, mainly on import - since 1973. He's a much underated artist. In the late 70s I used to work for a music paper, and would routinely rant about the non-availabilty of his stuff in the UK, while every rag-tag-and bobtail disco act got a release here. In the long-term no real damage done. Lamont was a millionaire many times over from his Motown songwriting royalties, so I guess his solo career was more of a hobby. But what a hobby. The best stuff - the early Invictus tracks ( as part of Holland-Dozier ), the first two ABC albums and, of course, Peddlin Music On The Side. Thanks to programming you can edit out the disposable songs. Good listening, and well worth a punt at the price.
