Amazon.co.uk Review
As "gigantic monster reptile attacks New York" movies go, you've got to admit that Godzilla delivers the goods, although its critical drubbing and box-office disappointment were arguably deserved. It's a shameless, uninspired crowd-pleaser that's content to serve up familiar action with the advantage of really fantastic special effects, and if you expect nothing more you'll be one among millions of satisfied customers. There's really no other way to approach it--you just have to accept the fact that Independence Day creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are unapologetic plagiarists, incapable of anything more than mindless spectacle that can play in any cinema in the world without dubbing or subtitles. The whole movie plays out like a series of highlights stolen from previous blockbusters of the 1990s; it's little more than a rehash of the Jurassic Park movies. The derivative script is so trivial that it's unworthy of comment, apart from a few choice laughs and the casting of Michael Lerner as New York's mayor, whose name is Ebert and who closely resembles a certain well-known movie critic. Perhaps that's a clever hint that this movie's essentially critic-proof. It's stupid but it's fun, and for most audiences that's a fitting definition of mainstream Hollywood entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Amazon.co.uk Review
Zorro, a pop-fiction creation invented by Johnston McCulley in 1918, is given new blood in this fast-moving and engaging version. Director Martin Campbell wisely instils a measure of frivolity into the deftly choreographed action sequences, while letting a serious tone creep in when appropriate. This covers much ground under the banner of romantic-action-adventure and it does so most excellently. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid effort, 27 Nov 2003
While it isn't the best film ever, it's hardly the worst. The DVD version comes with some quite excellent commentaries and all the trailers and whatnot. Yes, there are some glaring plot-holes, some actually defying the laws of physics, and some of the special effects are a bit suspect, but c'mon - it's Godzilla! The overall plot is not highly original, but it's the little sub-plots going on at the same time that make the film. Jean Reno is brilliant (as always), and Matthew Broderick plays his character very well. If you just sit back, relax and just take the film at face value, it's highly enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Godzilla 1985, the best Godzilla film ever, 3 April 2003
By A Customer
Godzilla 1985 (The Return of Godzilla) (1984, 1985)

Plot Synopsis for US version from Gary`s Godzilla Zone: A Japanese fishing boat (oh no, I don't like the sound of this already) is caught in a storm and lost at sea. The ship is later found by Goro, a news reporter. He finds only one lone survivor, Ken, who claims to see something "...huge," and "...like a monster" rise out of a volcano. The rest of the crew was killed by giant lice that was on Godzilla (the "...like a monster" of course).

The Prime Minister is reported that Godzilla has returned after 30 years (all the movies, except the original one was erased). He wants it to keep it a secret, so their won't be panic throughout Japan. Goro is furious that the editor won't let him publish his story, but he suggests to see Professor Hayashida, an expert on Godzilla. Goro learns that Professor Hayashida's parents were killed by Godzilla thirty years ago, and that Godzilla is a pretty much a walking nuclear weapon who is totally indestructible. Goro then meets up with Ken's sister, which he recognized from a picture Ken had given to him on the ship. The government had ordered that nobody is to tell her her brother is still alive. The words slip out of Goro's mouth when he talks to her.

A Soviet nuclear submarine is destroyed by Godzilla. Since Cold War tensions were high at this time, the Russians suspect that the Americans destroyed it. The Russians then threat to start a nuclear war with America that is to be fought over Europe. The Prime Minister quickly reveals to the press that the submarine was destroyed by Godzilla, and not the Americans. The news spreads quickly and the search for Godzilla goes on.

In America, the Pentagon calls for Steve Martin (who is played by Raymond Burr once again). Steve Martin had witnessed Godzilla's rampage thirty years before (In Godzilla, King of the Monsters), and was the only American who "...survived that catastrophe." (Probably because he was the only American in Japan at the time!) He cranks to the Pentagon about how nobody can kill Godzilla, and that it's his medication time (joke) :-)

Godzilla shows up at a nuclear power plant. Hayashida and Goro take tapes of Godzilla. While Godzilla is absorbing some radiation from the power plant's reactor, a flock of birds flies by. Godzilla follows them back to the sea. Hayashida concludes that this could be a weakness to Godzilla and it could have some use in the future.

The military begins a search for Godzilla. Then, unexpectedly, Godzilla shows up in front of a hovering helicopter with a nice big smile. Jets try to destroy Godzilla, but of course, all fails. He drops back into the ocean and shows up on the shore of Tokyo Bay. A Soviet sailor, out of panic, presses a button inside his ship that launches a nuclear missile from space towards Tokyo. The Japanese government then decides to launch the "Super-X," a heavy attack plane with titanium armor, and cadmium missiles. A virtual waste of Japanese taxpayer's money. The Super-X shoots missiles in Godzilla's mouth, which knock him out. Everyone except Hayashida and Steve Martin believe Godzilla is dead. Steve Martin then complains on how it is his nap time.

The Soviet missile shoots from the satellite. The Japanese then ask the Americans to fire a counter-missile towards the Soviet missile. The Americans agree and the counter-missile is successful. The radiation creates a storm which revives Godzilla from his deep sleep. Full of vengeance, Godzilla easily destroys the Super-X. Hayashida, along with the military, travel to Mount Mihara, a volcano. There Hayashida sets up a machine that creates a bird sound. Godzilla follows and is lured into the volcano. Godzilla's threat is gone, at least for now.
-----------------
This is definately the best Godzilla film ever and my favourite of the series (tied with Godzilla vs. Biollante). And I recommend this film (and Biollante) to non-fans of the genre. I really like the ending to this film, its very emotional and dramatic (The speech by Raymond Burr made it even more effective). I find the ending to this a lot sadder and emotional than Godzilla`s death in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nasty reptiles, bad actors., 31 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The stars of these two films are realistic in their appearance, their sound and their actions. If only the human actors could act as well. I must say that Godzilla's SFX are exceptional, and Anaconda's are alright too. What lets these films down is the lack of a decent plot and the over-acting and the underwhelming performances of the human leads.
In Godzilla, the big lizard decides to make Manhattan his nesting ground, causing a great deal of carnage. Broderick is the scientist (PERRRR-LEEEASE!!) who is brought in to aid in GZ's downfall and he is poor as the leading role. Jean Reno should have been the headliner for this movie as his presence is a grace to this film.
Overall this isn't a bad movie, in fact it's quite good if all you want is brainless fun, however, the performances are generally poor, and the dialogue and plot are shockingly bad (apart from the French who liven up proceedings).
Anaconda is not that bad a movie either. However, it is again the actors and the plot who spoil quite a decent action flick. Voight just plainly overacts as the bad guy. He is almost a rival to the snake for the prize of biggest slitherer. Ice Cube (I think that's who he is) is actually the better actor in the film, even though he's a rapper. J-Lo is really only there for eye-candy as she does nothing constructive throughout the film.
Everyone on the boat is actually quite dumb as they all fail to realise what a dangerous place the Amazon can be. In fact, people seem to have a deathwish throughout the film.
Over the two movies, the action is quite good, and the reptiles are convincing, however, the hams are a major downer and you'll just end up wishing that the creatures killed everyone in the movie bar a couple of people (Reno & Ice Cube).
The movies are a good choice though for kids and those who just like brainless fun.
A better choice in my mind would be Deep Blue Sea or even Arachnaphobia.
