Book Description

4 Oct 2007
Pete Haynes was the drummer and founder of the cult punk band The Lurkers. Here, he charts their rise from playing in West London pubs and clubs to appearing on Top of the Pops. Then they came down with a crash. This tell-all insider's look at the 70s punk scene mixes brutal humour with a sharp critique of the human condition from the point of view of a working class man. Haynes share his experience with The Sex Pistols, The Clash and many more classic bands and writes about what punk was really about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Esso's lonely men 19 Sep 2009

One of those honest, to the roots Punk era biographies that the literaly world is very short of, Pete Haynes (Manic Esso - drummer with the Lurkers)tells his story without a pause for sceptism or self congratulation. This is a fantatsic read for both old school Lurkers fans and any fan of musical biographies. There is plenty of humour (often of a dark kind), gutsy storytelling and plenty of excitement in here. From the early days of the Lurkers, their early gigs on the first wave Punk circuit, trips to Ireland and the USA (including Lurkers meet local rednecks story), the frantic nationwide touring, the sole Top of the Pops appearance(I don't need to tell her)the disapointing 2nd album, their split and reformation to Pete's post-Lurkers days, the story takes on everything with an honest approach. Much like fellow Lurker Arturo Bassick (who also has a fantastic book out 'Fat bloke, slim book)Esso tells it just as it were and you can't complain at that. Buy it and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Working Class Hero 16 Dec 2007
Absolute essential read for anyone either into the punk scene or bought up in 1970's England. Well written, funny in places - hard hitting in others. Although it documents the rise and fall of The Lurkers its really observing the whole era from an 'outsiders' view. The REAL punk attitude not just the dumb mohicans and gobbing. Great book Esso!

This book is a very good read.
Its obvious audience are those interested in punk music and the Lurkers in particular.
However it will appeal to a wider readership, those interested in people watching and "outsiders".
Good luck to Esso with the book
