Ever had a week like this:
Sunday- go to church, sing joyful songs of praise, hear an encouraging and challenging sermon about fighting sin, leave with renewed resolution to obey God and beat temptation.
Monday- make time to read the Bible and pray, fight with sin going well, feel close to God.
Tuesday- managed to scan over a Bible passage before running for the bus, feel flustered but still trying to live whole-heartedly for God.
Wednesday- busy day, no time to pray, feeling weak.
Thursday- give in to temptation, feel like a rubbish Christian.

And so it goes on.

In this commentary, the person constantly measures their spiritual success by their own achievements or failures. If they made time to pray, they feel good about where they stand with God. If they mess up, they feel ashamed. To them, the way God sees them fluctuates like a spiritual barometer. When they're doing well, He's smiling. When they're not, He's angry.

Terry Virgo's book 'God's Lavish Grace' is a fantastic smash-down to this way of thinking, which ensnares so many Christians today.

Virgo's main point is that Jesus has obtained a place for us to stand in grace, a place of total acceptance and security. He goes through the book of Romans to demonstrate that
'they which receive abundance of grace... shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.' Rom 5:17

Therefore your daily walk with God is not about your spirituality or performance, but about your position in Christ.

Christ's unchanging righteousness is yours every day and is not in the least dependent on your feelings or your performance!

God has not called us to a life of slavery but one of overcoming.

A Balanced View of God's grace from a mature teacher 7 Feb. 2007
By L. Bradford - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I would HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone wanting to get a balanced look at God's grace. It has been such a great blessing to me that I have now sent up to a dozen copies to friends around the world. Terry does an excellent job of laying out the reasons why Christians should NOT be wrestling with issues of "the law," but living in such gratitude to Jesus for His sacrifice that their heart's one desire is to please Him. After all, Jesus came to set us free from the law of sin and death. Yet, Terry balances his teaching of grace by pointing out that grace is not a license to sin, but a freedom to enter into dynamic relationship with our merciful God. It is God's intention to free us to live a life guided by His Spirit, eager to follow Christ wherever He calls us. This book is a "must read" for every serious believer!

A Life-Changing Message! 2 July 2008
By Curt McCutchan - Published on
Format: Paperback
When I first heard Terry Virgo speak on grace, it changed my life. Over time this truth began to transform how I thought & lived. This book captures this wonderful message in a way that teaches & stirs you. It truly is a "too good to be true" message! I particularly liked his approach to living the Christian life founded upon the truth that we "reign in life" because of His love and not one's own works. He also addresses how grace teaches us to live obediently out of grace rather than out of the Law, guilt and the "have-to" mentality so prevalent today. If you're looking to learn to live more fully out of freedom and God's choice to love you...take up and read!

Great book. You'll return to it again and again for hope, encouragement and to treasure the great doctrines of our awesome God and Saviour Jesus Christ. This book makes a great gift and might help a non believer see and savor Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Worth reading more than once 22 Jun. 2012

I really liked this book. It's a very balanced presentation of the gospel. Worth reading more than once. He's got some audio presentations online of this same book which I've listened to several times now - check it out. I'm not a fan of "Once Saved Always Saved" or Calvinism. I'm not sure where Terry stands, but his presentation did not come across as irresponsible (e.g. he doesn't shrug off the need to repent, but gives us the correct motive for doing so). He focuses us on our new identify "in Christ", and the proper motives for holiness. Anyone constantly beating themselves up over sin and struggling with guilt should definitely check this book out. I've given this book 4 out of 5 stars because, he does not address the possibility that a believer "once saved" can reject salvation. Our motive should be love, but there should be a sober understanding of the consequences of our choices.
