Format:Audio CD
This album will always hold special memories for me. It was one of my late father's favourite records and I remember he used to call it 'the great banana in the sky'! Well just look at that album cover and you'll see why! Allthough as other reviewers have noted it's not his best ever album, but there are some truly great tracks to be found here and if you're in the mood for some laid back jazzy, bluesy smooth rock then this solid piece of Chris Rea magic is for you.
It starts out with the beautiful winding melody of Nothing to Fear which leads into the perfect Miles is a Cigarettte, which I think is a wondeful tribute to the genius who was Miles Davies. The single God's Great Banana Skin is one of those overlooked Rea classics, great hook, clever lyrics and just a good thumpin' tune. All the tracks are great if you ask me, but then again the album does hold very special memories of riding in the car with my dear old Dad blasting this out on the stereo.
I can highly reccommend this record if you like your blues laid back and your vocal smokey, a top slice of 90s Chris Rea at his best.

This is not the greatest of Rea CD's but its also not the worst either. The opening track and lead off single "Nothing to fear" is the real highlight, a smouldering slowbuilder with some fantastic guitar playing and "atmosphere", the lyrics are amazingly insightful and years ahead of there time taking into account the events since nine eleven. Track 2 "Miles is a cigarette" seems to be a forerunner of the more recent "mellow blues" sound that Rea built upon 13 years later with the "Blue Jukebox" Jazzeeblue CD.
"God's Great Banana Skin" is classic Rea pop with a catchy chorus and melody. The rest is fairly standard fair with some nice melodies and muscianship but nothing above the average.
I feel that after the major success of his 80's L.P.s it sounds as if he was running out of idea's, and maybe record company commitment, and it was only until after his serious illness in the early part of the 21st century does Rea seem to get back to doing something that he appears to really care about with his "Stoney Road" project.
However, this is a decent enough CD and one you should not be fearful of having in your collection, but it is Rea, apart from 2/3 tracks, in third gear.

I bought this gem primarily for Nothing To Fear, which is one of the best guitar songs ever.
So moody, raw, delicate, subtle, in-your-face... A real masterpiece.
There are some other good songs on it, the title track is very enjoyable, and some less memorable ones.
But Nothing To Fear makes the album for me.

a great album
This Chris Rea album starts with the top 20 single, Nothing to fear. It is a long song , maybe too long, but some great guitar work. the next song is Miles is a cigarette. Read more

Fantastically mellow
This album is the type of mellow and relaxing music that befits a late evening, when you want to relax and chill out and forget everything. Chris Rea at his best!
