Book Description

The moving and inspirational story of a women who turned from nun to prostitute, before finally confronting the demons of her past

Product Description

Traumatised by a terrible event in her childhood, Carla van Raay entered a convent at the age of eighteen. Expecting to find understanding and inner peace amongst her fellow nuns, she instead became trapped in a web of cruel regulations that drove her to the brink of insanity. Finally released from her vows, she escaped back into the outside world even more damaged than she had been before.

A hasty marriage and separation left Carla with a daughter to support. With few professional skills to rely on from her years as a nun, she turned to another age-old profession - prostitution. She worked as an escort to learn the ropes, then struck out on her own, setting up a massage service. God's Callgirl was born. At first she relished her new-found sexuality, but when eventually the darker side of the business began to assert itself, Carla was forced to confront the dark secrets of her past.

Having been educated by nuns, I quite looked forward to reading this book. Without question, Miss vav Raay had a potentially interesting tale to tell. How, one wonders, could a nun possibly end up as a callgirl? Undoubtedly, her father's abuse during childhood had a profound effect on her psychological development, but reading through the book it became increasingly difficult to like her or feel sympathy towards her. Her constant victim status became wearying, and when she finally becomes a callgirl, I was puzzled by the amount of pages and detail devoted to the 'services'she provided for her clients.(Perhaps she had a word count to achieve). I did not finish reading this book. I lost interest in whether Miss van Raay found peace and redemption or not. I don't feel this is an honest account, and have consigned it to its rightful place in my household....the dustbin.

When I started this book I was enthralled. Then it got to the bit where she joins the convent and I have to say it just went completely downhill from there!!

Far too much emphasis was put on EVERY single vow and ways of the convent - some people would call this attention to detail but I found it intensely boring and very unnecessary as far as her story went. She rambled on and on about her life in the convent and told us every little thing she did. I started to skip huge chunks - in any other book you would miss a fundamental part of the story but not in this one!

I thought the story would improve once she got to her life of prostitution but the same happened again! Details on what felt like every single on of her clients, what they liked, their problems etc etc etc! Again I missed huge chunks of this as it was completely irrelevant to HER story.

I was extremely disappointed with this book - it felt more like you were reading someone's very un-edited diary than a book. I don't agree with others who have said they didn't sympathise with her as I did as no child should have to go through what she endured. But I just found the story long winded and very badly written.

I picked this up in Heathrow because it seemed like it was going to be an easy read and good for travelling. I was so disappointed. The first part of the book, when she is a nun, is reasonably interesting. When she becomes a callgirl it becomes unbelievably dull. I felt no empathy with her whatsoever. She never took responsibility for any of her actions and it turned into a boring list of relationships she messed up. Granted, she had a miserable childhood...but I don't think that excuses her writing such a drawn out book. It's a pity her editor wasn't as vigorous in the editing as she was in her massage parlour. I never would have thought a book about a nun who becomes a hooker could be dull and painful to read, but she managed it. I really would not spend the money on this. I struggled so hard to make myself finish it. Felt like my penance for the year!
