4.0 out of 5 stars Just like being a kid again!, 5 April 2006
By Grev (Brighton) - See all my reviews

This fun little epic completely slipped under my radar until I chanced upon the collected edition. Joe Casey's script perfectly complements Tom Scioli's lunatic 60's Jack Kirby style artwork, i.e. massively over the top perspective angles and ridiculous character anatomies that are completely wrong but he somehow makes work. They combine so well in fact that the fight scenes transport you back to those heady days reading superhero comics as a kid... so much so that they can sometimes make the expostion scenes between fights drag a little, mainly because you can't wait for another fight to break out, not because they're badly written. This isn't just a hollow pastiche of sixties comics, however. Some of the characters are distinctly modern - they just happen to inhabit a world where the artwork and villains hark back to a bygone age of comics.

So in short this is one of those rare comics where the script and artwork are pretty perfectly in tune - almost as lunatic as Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol at it's best, and a lot more fun than Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol at it's frequent worst.

And don't let yourself be put off by the artwork being labelled Kirby-esque, that dreaded word of praise bandied about by ancient know-it-all grey haired fanboys who think all comics started and stopped with Jack Kirby and have bored everybody riged ever since. It's a lot better than that, and a lot better than the purists deserve.
