An education in the "new-evil" of Northern Soceity, 4 Jan 2002

This review is from: Godfathers! (Paperback)
My first inclination to buy this book was out of respect for the late Martin O'Hagan, much of whom's work led to this book, and I wasn't really bothered about learning of the people running the drugs trade in Northern Ireland. I was pleasantly surprised however to find it an unusually clear insight to the links between the paramilitaries and the drug "Godfathers" of Northern Ireland.
Jim McDowell pulls no punches and his genuine passion to see these men - and women - brought to justice is evident and is easily identifiable with. His disregard of what community a criminal belongs to is also refreshing in a society dogged by sectarianism.
While not quite in the same class as his Sunday World colleague Paul Williams' Gangland, it is nonetheless an interesting read for anyone interested in Irish crime. It is also of interest to anyone wanting to understand the involvement of paramilitaries from both sides of the divide in this big-money trade.
Although its organization and layout came accross as hurried (it was released within days of Martin's death), and some of the writing would be more at home in the Sunday tabloid of which McDowell is Northrn Editor, it is still well worth a read for its frankness, the passion of the author and for its thus far unique insight into the violent, vicious and carefree world of the drugs "Godfathers" and the involvement of paramilitary organizations in their world.
