Amazon.co.uk Review

There’s been some suspicion about the way some studios have shovelled back catalogue movies onto the Blu-ray format without taking the time to genuinely enhanced the picture and sound quality of the productions to make such a format upgrade worthwhile. You can aim no such qualms at Paramount Pictures with its sublime Godfather Trilogy box set, which takes arguably cinema’s most acclaimed trilogy of films (well, the first two anyway), and gives them a useful lick of paint.

The highlight of the set, as you’d expect, remains Francis Ford Coppola’s astounding trilogy itself, a studious, gripping, cross-generational tale of the Corleone family. The first two films richly deserved their many Oscar wins, and while the third is considerably weaker, it’s still not short of many impressive moments. The Godfather Trilogy is certainly one of cinema’s most impressive achievements to date.

The Blu-ray set reflects the muted palette that director Francis Ford Coppola opted for in making the films, and inevitably contrasted with a modern day big-budget blockbuster, the visual transfer isn’t going to be listed as a 1080p poster child. Yet, in perspective, this is still an excellent transfer, offering a sizable upgrade over the DVDs and making the film look and sound better than ever before. Genuine care has clearly been taken here to balance Coppola’s original intentions with high definition media, and with a solid pack of extra features to back the films up, this is an excellent box set, and set to be a very treasured one. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

THE GODFATHER is a chilling portrait of a Sicilian family's rise and near fall from power in America, and the passage of rites from father to son. Based on the novel by Mario Puzo. THE GODFATHER – PART II continues the saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. Rounding off this epic trilogy, THE GODFATHER - PART III sees Michael searching for his successor and a way of freeing his family from a life of crime.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Blufather, 1 Nov 2008
I was really looking forward to the Blu-ray release of the Godfather films. Unfortunately, picture quality is not noticeably better than a standard DVD and is grainy in a lot of scenes. If you already own the Coppola Restoration on DVD, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to Blu-ray if you think it will have superior picture quality. You may end up disappointed like me. The films are of course fantastic and under normal circumstances, this would get the five stars, but I'm going to minus one for the disappointing picture quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's time people understand Blu Ray, 10 April 2009
By Mr. John P. Lusk (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've read a few reviews now from people complaining about the transfer and while I can understand why they are saying what they are saying it is a lack of understanding that is behind this opinion.
The transfer on these discs is EXCEPTIONAL and it cannot get any better than this. The grain and muted colours that have displeased some people, were deliberate choices of the directer and cinematographer at the time of filming. They are as much a part of the Godfather as Brando's speech; They may not be to your taste but they are what the directer wanted.
I can understand that people see blu-ray and expect crisp, saturated visuals but that is not what the format is about. It is allowing film makers the opportunity to present their films to the home audience they way that they always wanted them to be.
The actual Transfer is outstanding and looks Exactly as it was always meant to look.
If you are a Godfather fanatic then don't hesitate to pick up this box set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best looking Godfather yet, but..., 7 Feb 2009
By Mr. Blu (Europe) - See all my reviews
The films are great, no question. The poor casting of Sofia Coppola due to Winona Ryder's withdrawal from Godfather III doesn't prevent it from being a great film. But the picture quality will disappoint most people. These films do not look like Blu-Rays a la "Casino Royale" if that's what you're expecting. The films have their Hi-def moments but there is also a lot of grain and lower def feel to much of the first two films. Going back to the originals as one reviewer suggests won't help. The original is in poor condition, because so many prints were made: the films were a victim of their own success. I have not seen the latest Coppola DVD restoration, so I cannot comment on whether this is much of an advance on that. It IS the best Godfather Trilogy I have ever seen, there ARE Hi-def moments (more in better lit scenes) and the film is presented in full screen on a 16:9 television (no black horizontal lines). I think it is worth buying (paticularly at the current price) just don't expect the quality of a film made last year.
