Product Description

Review

Burns has crafted a superb biography that traces her influence, places Rand in historical context, avoids both condemnation and hagiography, and undercuts the view, fostered by Rand herself, that she was a self-created genius. (Lewis A. Erenberg, Journal of Historical Biography )

a pleasure to read (Political Studies Review )

[an] important study (Elaine Showalter, Times Literary Supplement )

A smart assessment of Rand's life and ideas and how they influenced each other... As Ms. Burns successfully demonstrates, Rand's ideas have remained an important part of the American ideological mix, especially in how she honored the creative powers of American business in a free market to improve human lives. Ms. Burns' readers will see Rand still has the power to instruct on the meaning and scary implications of government growth in the age of Barack Obama. (Brian Doherty, The Washington Times )

Burns has the edge, though, in identifying Rand's intellectual legacy. She describes Rand as "the ultimate gateway drug to life on the right" elaborating: "Just as Rand had provided businessmen with a set of ideas that met their need to feel righteous and honorable in their professional lives, she gave young people a philosophical system that met their deep need for order and certainty. (Washington Monthly Magazine )

Burns, a professor of history, more ably situates Rand within and against the world of American conservatism (The New Yorker )

A well-written and absorbing biography of Rand, it also places her ideas and influence in three overlapping contexts. Goddess of the Market goes a long way toward explaining both the popularity of Rand's ideas and their somewhat marginalized status. (U.S. Intellectual History )

This is a significant contribution to Rand scholarship and an engaging read for anyone interested in Rand or 20th-century politics and intellectual life (M. L. Jackson, CHOICE )

balanced and engaging (Alex Goodall, Literary Review )

At last! A well-balances book about Ayn Rand (1905-82), the guru of selfishness. After all the attack memoirs and right-wing adulation, Jennifer Burns has finally given us an intellectual biography (Tribune )

Excellent (Time magazine )

Genuinely revealing 24 Aug 2011

This was an interesting look at Rand's work and particularly showed how she was influenced by many other thinkers and writers (despite claiming that Aristotle was her only influence) and also how she influenced Conservatives and libertarians in the US.

The first section about her early life is a bit perfunctory and the writing is a bit clichéd.

It does improve a lot when the author discusses her actual work. Her research is very impressive and it is interesting how she reveals how journals published posthumously have had their wording altered.

The vast majority of reviewers seem to rate the book very highly. The Ayn Rand institute have attacked it but in my opinion their criticisms do not seem to be warranted.

The author does a good job in dealing seriously with Rand's philosophy and fiction.

I thought this book was an interesting biography. I quite like Ayn Rand's work. She provides a moral defense of free markets rather than just the practical defense many other authors seem content with. This book describes some of the influences on her work from other people. Rand said on many occasions that she wasn't influenced by anyone else, but Burns explains that this is not true and describes the intellectual relationship between Rand and Isabel Paterson, among others. Burns also describes the cult of personality that built up around Rand and what happened between Rand and Nathaniel Branden. If you've read some of Rand's books and want to know more about her life and her intellectual influences this book is worth reading.

I was keen to read this book, having promised so many things in the promotion, but was very dissapointed on completion. There was no new information, as all of the detail have previously been published elsewhere. Those interested in Ayn Rand would do better by reading Rands Marginalia, Journals or The Passion of Ayn Rands Critics.

This author clearly has an axe to grind which as at variance with the subject promised, and detracts from the historical value of several issues.
