Book Description

28 July 2009
In this lush and seductive novel, exciting new author Tessa Dare takes desire to brazen heights.

Ever the bold adventuress, Lucy Waltham has decided to go hunting for a husband. But first she needs some target practice. So she turns to her brother’s best friend, Jeremy Trescott, the Earl of Kendall, to hone her seductive wiles on him before setting her sights on another man. But her practice kisses spark a smoldering passion–one that could send all her plans up in smoke.

Jeremy has an influential title, a vast fortune, and a painful past full of long-buried secrets. He keeps a safe distance from his own emotions, but to distract Lucy from her reckless scheming, he must give his passions free rein. Their sensual battle of wills is as maddening as it is delicious, but the longer he succeeds in managing the headstrong temptress, the closer Jeremy comes to losing control. When scandal breaks, can he bring himself to abandon Lucy to her ruin? Or will he risk his heart and claim her for his own?

4.0 out of 5 stars Goddess of Determination 19 Aug 2009
By Book Gannet TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lucy Waltham has been in love with Sir Toby Aldridge for years. So why is she in another man's bedroom in the middle of the night, practising her kissing?

That's something Jeremy Trescott, Earl of Kendall would dearly love to know. Except the truth is almost worse. That Lucy fancies herself in love with Toby is nothing new, but her sudden desperation to seduce him and trap him into marriage to stop him marrying someone else, is a whole new adventure. And one Jeremy has absolutely no desire to allow.

Lucy's always been a disaster waiting to happen, yet after a few clumsy kisses, the infamously cold-hearted earl finds the last thing he wants is to see Lucy hurt. No matter how determined she is to get what she wants. So if Jeremy can't stop her, well, he might as well join her...

This is a cracking debut from Tessa Dare, filled with gorgeous prose, engaging characters, passion and some excruciatingly funny moments (well, some are just plain embarrassing). Lucy is a determined girl, with no fears over being out to get what she wants. Pride, dignity and the wants of others are nothing to her. At least not at the beginning. Despite the possibility for this to get incredibly annoying, there is something endearing about the way she ploughs on. And thankfully grows up.

She's not an idiot, and Dare beautifully crafts Lucy's progression from blindly wilful, to mature and strong (and still wilful, but you can't have everything). In this she is a perfect match for Jeremy, who has got the reserved façade down to an art. Together the pair strike sparks off each other, and their emotional journey is plotted with all the confidence of an established author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty and entertaining debut 31 Dec 2009
By josie82 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lucy Waltham has been in love with her brother's friend Toby for most of her life. When she realises that he's about to propose to another, she decides that it's time to put her husband hunting skills to the test in order to win her man. But first she needs to make sure her kisses are up to scratch.

Jeremy Trescott, Earl of Kendall is appalled that Lucy seems determined to practice her seductive wiles on him. But when the innocent game sparks a smouldering passion neither can imagine what scandals the pair can create or what they will risk in order to win the others heart.

This was Tessa Dare's debut novel and I was totally enchanted by it from beginning to end. Lucy was a headstrong, hoyden of a girl but she was charming and likeable and it was nice to watch her grow throughout the novel. Jeremy was, for me, the perfect hero: deep, mysterious and brooding while also being passionate and in need of the love of a good woman. I felt the pair were perfect for each other and I loved their interactions.

The conflict was real and interesting but it was the emotions and sensuality that made the novel for me. The sexual tension was built splendidly and the overall love story gave me wonderful butterflies in my stomach from beginning to end. The writing was very well done and there were plenty of witty moments that made me laugh out loud on some occasions. I can't wait for the next book in the series, Surrender of a Siren, but do hope that the covers get a little better because they're not to my taste at all! Regardless, I would definitely recommend this book if you like Regency historical romances - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginning. 19 Aug 2009
By Detra Fitch TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Set in the year 1817. For the last several years Henry Waltham has hosted an annual hunting party in the autumn for his three closest friends at Waltham Manor. The only female among them had been his little sister, Lucinda "Lucy". Little Lucy has adored Sir Toby Aldridge since the first gathering when he dubbed her his "Diana, Goddess of the Hunt". Lucy never went off to school or had a Season in London. Henry kept Lucy at home, her education taught by a never-ending-line of governesses. But then Henry wed.

Looking back, it seems to Lucy that Henry's marriage is what began all her current problems. Felix, one of Henry's three friends, followed Henry's example and has recently wed. As much as Felix's new wife and Lucy dislike one another, Lucy feels that she could simply ignore the spiteful woman. Problem is that the hag brought her sister, Sophia Hathaway, to the hunting party this year and Toby is so smitten by her that he plans to propose. Desperate to turn Toby's affections toward herself, Lucy decides to seduce Toby. She even read a book on how to do so. For practice, Lucy wakes up Jeremy Trescott, the sixth Earl of Kendall.

After eight annual hunting parties with Lucy, none of Henry's three friends see Lucy as the desirable young lady of marriageable age in which she has become. Yet all the gentlemen, including Henry, have known about Lucy's crush on Sir Toby. But when Lucy wakes Jeremy up in the middle of the night to practice kissing seductively with him, Jeremy knows the men have a real problem. The men decide that Jeremy should distract Lucy from Toby and Sophia by paying a bit of romantic attention to her. Jeremy dares not inform them that after Lucy's practice kisses his brotherly feelings toward her have changed.
