HASH(0x9bcba7a4) out of 5 stars An oft forgotten perspective 21 Sept. 2013
By Nathaniel McPherson-Vitkus - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
To a reader of philosophy, particularly one with interest in the early genesis of revolutionary communist thought, God and the State offers a fascinating look at a counter approach to better known, more authoritarian models of communist theory. Written in a simple yet eloquent and impassioned style, Bakunin moves from providing an anti-theological argument, to linking the existence of religious power structures with worldly ones, to finally arguing against any form of governance with easy grace that allows a modern reader to follow the flow of argument far better than is possible in many contemporary works. While many of the unacknowledged assumptions and underlying arguments are distinctively antiquated, Bakunin makes efforts to allow for growth and further perfection of his understanding, giving the work a surprising applicability to our modern era. The work is punctuated with bold, even brash, pronouncements that still ring strong to the modern reader, even if one does not accept their veracity. For any political philosophy enthusiast it remains a must-read.

HASH(0x9d4af90c) out of 5 stars Well formatted, well written and required reading for the well-read. 22 Nov. 2013

God and the State is a great, though unfinished treatise on the synonymous roots of the Church and the State in our society, or more accurately, the State's roots in the Church. While this may be a bit dense and rambling for those not used to philosophical writings of the 19th century, those well-versed in the tradition will find it particularly illuminating. He is openly hostile to authority and man's attempt to use the Church, the State or even science to establish it. This may rankle some but it is a viewpoint well backed up with examples and exposition.

The Kindle version is well-formatted and didn't suffer from the many formatting problems that many of the classics do, especially those as neglected intellectually as this one. More than worth the price tag, I highly recommend this and think it should be required reading for those who have embarked down the road of philosophy.

HASH(0x9d4afd80) out of 5 stars Required reading for freethinkers and real liberty lovers 30 Dec. 2012

An easy to understand primer on why God (religion) and the State cannot exist if humanity is to live free.
HASH(0x9c485900) out of 5 stars A high-speed roller-coaster of the relationship between Religion and State. 10 Feb. 2014
By Luis Guillermo Pineda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This was a very accessible treatise on the perils of religion and it's use as an institution that entrusts power to the ruling elites.

In this treatise Bakunin proposes an understanding of the history of religion as the history of the struggle between the proletariat and the elites; and as such, io an instrument that legitimizes the establishment of the latter.
HASH(0x9c4859d8) out of 5 stars A little tedious, but important Anarchist reasoning 9 Aug. 2015
By michael wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is a classic of thought which has heavily influenced Anarchists and leftist groups to the modern day. Any serious student of politics should read this, since it is such a seminal work. Some of the ideas contained herein are no longer acceptable, but it's overall influence is great.
