With a thrill-kill philosophy somewhere between the Dionysian and the Nietzchean, Monster Magnet's superhuman cartoon reality becomes ever more enveloping with each subsequent album. And from the first chord of God Says No, you know you are in for a wild ride. "Melt" finds head Magnet Dave Wyndorf, in his "world of pills" wondering "how the world should have cried on the day Jack Kirby died". The obvious first single, "Heads Explode", rolls along with same mock mod-fervour as "See You In Hell" (from Powertrip) before detonating into absolute mayhem at the chorus. Throughout, Wyndorf plays the arch-devil's advocate, switching between adulation and annihilation of his bitch/goddess foil (on tracks like "Doomsday" and "Queen Of You"). "Gravity Well" is as raw as it gets, bare bones blues that sounds like a version of Son House's "John The Revelator" recorded on the wrong side of the tracks. And, as the high priest of all that he surveys, Wyndorf faces his own Judgment Day on the sin-soaked ramble of "God Says No", before finally coming down on the side of the damned. God Says No is the fifth full-length studio album from Monster Magnet and was released in the year 2000, just short two years after the Red Bank, New Jersey based band's previous commercial-breakthrough record Powertrip.
Highlights include the ridiculously catchy `Kiss Of The Scorpion,' as well as the grooving `All Shook Out,' the heavy `Down In The Jungle' and the popular eastern-tinged `Cry.'
The album finds Monster Magnet at their most diverse and eclectic, expanding further on styles and sounds only previously hinted at in their back catalogue, while still maintain the band's trademark lyrical and vocal attitude. The aforementioned `Kiss Of The Scorpion' is an uplifting and incredibly enjoyable track with a keyboard backing, `Queen Of You' has electronic drums, `Gravity Well' is a slide guitar driven Blues number and `Heads Explode' sounds like the lead single from a Nu Metal band (and indeed was included on the Dracula 2000 soundtrack)
The diversity of the record, as well as the perceived stripping back of studio wizardry and psychedelic influences make this album something of a divisive record amongst fans. Some people are just happy to come along with Monster Magnet for the ride and don't mind what territory they are covering because it is being done so well, and some are unconvinced by the band's eclecticism and don't rate the album as highly as some of their pioneering early albums.
There are still tracks here too that are perfect for specifically Stoner Rock fans and not just Monster Magnet fans up for a bit of anything; `All Shook Out,' `Melt,' and `My Little Friend' for example would fit in well with the band's older material a little easier, and help to bridge the difference.
Personally I still think this is a good album and while it may not be to everyone's tastes I believe it is a grower of an album you should give a fair couple of listens first, to see if you are interested rather than just writing it off completely. Dave's vocals are still brilliant after all and there are plenty of great big riffs amongst the keyboards and electronic beats.
Overall; God Says No is not a traditional Monster Magnet album, but is so well written and interesting that it should be experienced by everyone interested in the band at least a few times, and if given a fair chance may still keep a lot of fans happy.

It's only two years since 'Powertrip', but this album is very timely. With Christmas and the real end of the century approaching what more could any music lover ask for than a brand new Monster Magnet album? And they haven't lost that touch! While it doesn't explore territory that their last two days albums haven't already traversed, it presents us with a whole new bunch of cosmic songs and tunes, superbly crafted and played. It is a joy to hear Dave sing and the guitars ring out! This is cosmic music at its best, and the 70's glam rock, 60's refrains and metal noise are all there. Rock on!
It's a great album, not a world changer, but they've already been there and done that! This album is worth 5 stars because it maintains the very high quality of their previous releases, even if it doesn't specifically add to them.

When I first got this album, I thought there was no way it could be better than their 1998 album 'Powertrip'. But I was wrong. Wyndorf and the boys have done it again.
This is a great album. From the opener 'Melt' through 'Heads Explode' the strangely touching 'Queen of You' and right into the bonus tracks, every song on this album not only screams at you classic, but also slaps you in the face and kicks you in the crotch to emphasise the fact.
The change in Monster Magnet from their early stoner-grunge days to out and out Rock Gods is amazing, but they've conquered and left their own inimitable and indelible marks on both genres.
