Product Description

Review

'The most in-depth account of the Kinks - the story laid bare in God Save the Kinks is one of the greatest in British pop history.'

(Living North Resident)

'An excellent book on the band. It was amusing to see so many people spilling the beans after all this time.'

(Ex-member of The Kinks John Gosling)

'A lively account of the Ray Davies-fronted group’s life and times with a good eye for the many incidents of wilfulness and self-sabotage that stopped the band being quite as appreciated as they deserved.'

(Metro)

'A tragicomic epic of triumph and dysfunction, this is a highly readable account of a unique career. Although a self-confessed worshipper, Jovanovic never fawns over his subject, writing instead with a clear eye for detail and context ... it’s a fine retelling of a very British legend.'

(The Scotsman)

'A fond yet revealing portrait of a Brit-pop institution.'

(Choice magazine)

**** ‘Neatly spun… Virtually every page unfolds a story of booze, bad luck or a punch-up … the drama grows madder as the years pass.’

(Pat Gilbert Q)

Excellent. Enjoyed all the tour of the Kinks journey. Knew there was in band fighting but not this much. Very good knowledge by the author. Looking forward to Ray Davies's autobiography in October to hear his side. Would definitely advise you to buy this. Kinks are my third favourite band and loved this.

There have been quite a few works in recent years on the Kinks, who are one of the greatest of English rock bands. This work covers much ground, and is notable for its insights into the personalities and personal lives of the Davies brothers that fuelled their drive and their success. It follows the traditional emphasis on the early success of the 1960s rather than the later US success. A very worthwhile book all the same,

I am a huge fan of The Kinks and have read every book on them that I could find. This is one of the best. Rob Jovanovic knows his stuff and has done a lot of thorough research. There are plenty of new interviews with people involved with The Kinks and Ray Davies over the years who have never been interviewed before. This gives a great insight into Ray Davies and why he is like he is and possibly why there will never be a Kinks reunion.
If you have never read a Kinks biography then this is the one, it will tell you all you need to know about, what I think is the world's greatest band and the genius that is Ray Davies.

Very informative with a clear understanding of the groups place in the pantheon of rock culture..... The writing is analytical and gives a precise, objective and realistic account of the bands' artistic talents and its ability to undermine their achievements by poor decisions, infighting, petty jealousies and stubbornness, bad management .
The RCA years and the 1970s touring of the USA after the union ban, White city concert demonstrate how the under-dog nature of the Kinks was built on perseverance and artistic integrity, guts and determination. This is superbly chronicled by Rob's detailed account of the bands legacy and cultural significance. A must read for all Kinks devotes .
