In the liner notes Cash tells us "At times, I'm a voice crying in the wilderness, but at times I'm right on the money...", inadvertently telling us this record's greatest flaw. 'God' suffers from inconsistency; at times it is fantastic, like the brilliant mono 'Redemption', but at others, Cash sounds unconcerned and the music uninspired, like the downright dull take on 'Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)'.
There's great material here, but the occasional dross makes the compilation somewhat frustrating. And the tracklisting, putting kids' song 'It Was Jesus' inbetween the dead serious 'My God is Real' and 'Why Me Lord', serves to emphasise the inconsistency of the album.
