I wanted a book that would be witty & funny in order to keep me interested & being a big fan of the show I thought why not give this book a go. Have to say I utterly enjoied reading it, though at times nearing the borders of distasteful this is why I loved it, its a trueful representation as Hank as a character, he is never afraid to just be upfront about things & say it like it is. I loved the sex, drugs & Rock n roll theme portrayed. Loved laughing at his failures & the brillaint humour used. Everytime I sat there reading it I felt a little like Mia from the show when Hank first meets her sat in the bookstore reading his book & laughing to herself, which is exactly what it makes you do. I enjoied the characters, the plot & felt it was just the right length, it left you wanting more which is what a book should do.

I would definately recommend it to anyone who enjoied the show, though not for those who haven't seen it as in my opinion you definately need to know a little about Hank before you go diving in at the deep end as you could get easily offended. Loved the title too, always gets people asking about what your reading possibly because they think your reading some sort of religious hate book rather than a comedy. I love Californication & I loved this book fingers crossed they release the other two novels featured on the show.

For those who enjoyed the Californication TV programs, they will love this book. It gives an insight to why Hank is Hank. His loves, his jobs, his outlook on people and life. The lost of his mother and his realationship with his dad, is also covered and covered well.

He chases women he shouldn't and pushes away those he should keep close.

Well written, whitty and gritty. A very easy read and very entertaining.

A must for the fans of the show or the geeks who need more.

First of all, this isn't a book about Californication. It is meant to be the book that the main character, Hank, wrote. I am one of those sad, sad people that want fictional characters and what not to be real. Thats why i like books like these. The story is about a young man that is quite unlucky with the ladies and jobs. He ends up becoming a drug dealer and and trying to woo a woman in a relationship. Lots of funny, and sometimes tragic, things happen which makes it interesting through out. The narration will make you picture Hank Moody and hear his beaten down by life voice, which in my opinion is great! I recommend this to fans of the show. It clearly has the same writers and i can't get enough of the humour!

Being a fan of the show, it was only logical that I buy this book to support it and also to go with my recent introduction into Charles Bukowski. I must say this is a brilliant book and stands as a testament to what Tom Kapinos (show creator) was made. Writting in Bukowski-esque prose, which is simplistic, ironic, and with a hint of naivety.

The book is at the brunt of reality, so if you are terribly sensitive to reality, aspects of modern society (drugs, alcohol, amorality) or sex then this novel will really get your blood boiling. Funny at times, sad at others, and always worth turning the page, I thoroughly recommend this book to get inside the mind of Californication's lead character, or just to buy a book that just a joy to read.

And also as a sidenote: I loved the reaction I got from Christians when the saw the book's front cover that resembled a kettle that had finished boiling water.

I love the show and was interested to read the book that featured so strongly in the first series. It no secret that the writer and co-producer of the show, Tom Kapinos, is a huge fan of the American Author Charles Bukowski (there are great similarities between him and Duchovny's character), in fact the main character in his first book is actually called Hank.
Anyway, to the book itself. I thought is was ok. It's not what I imagined the fictional character of Hank to have written, i expected something much deeper and to a much higher standard. The book lets the charcter down. I would find it hard to recommend this book and would prefer to point fans of the series to Bukowski's work where you can begin to understand some of the background to the creation of Hank and the type of writer he's meant to be

This book is an absolute must read for all Californicaton fan.

I was really much looking forward to read this novel and it did not left me disappointed.
Really surprised that the book actually came out (I found it accidentally when browsing for Californication DVDs).

Reading a love story from the man's point of view is always a fresh and exiting thing for me. Yes, it is a love story, but do not imagine those girlie curl up on the sofa with a book night with it. It is not a hot chocolate book.

Quick read as it is only 200 pages. Moving fast story, funny style. Just like the sitcom.

Nothing special, only takes some hours to read, it kept me going until season 4 opener though. As a marketing idea, I value it very high, I liked the feeling of reading Hank's book.

This one really got under my skin. I have to admit that my read began with a healthy dose of skepticism. Despite this however I found it to be a totally addictive narrative. My doubts were mostly founded in the fact that not only was it a work of fiction, but that it was a work of fiction born of another work of fiction written by a fictitious author. Hank Moody IS the author. Anyone who knows his character well can feel his mark on this story; and this makes it all the more impressive. Kudos to the writers of the show that knew their creation so well that they could quite convincingly create his own creation. It is a fast paced yet disturbingly comfortable read that made me question my own motives in life more than once, and left me thinking long after I turned the last page.
