4.0 out of 5 stars Bless you, Mr Vonnegut, 26 Mar 2000
By A Customer
"Men either turn into thin old men or fat old men," a friend said to me the other day. Vonnegut is tall and slim, and his tales and volumes increasingly so. He seems to be refining his core philosophy until it becomes pinprick-sized, like the diminishing dot of light that you used to get when you turned off a television screen. I, for one, don't want that dot to disappear -- on the basis of this easily dismissed little book, it is still immeasurably rich with sanity and good sense and love. So it goes.

4.0 out of 5 stars a delicacy, 12 Mar 2000
By A Customer
The endlessly inventive Mr Vonnegut has triumphed again with this slim book. Superficially it seems to contain nothing at all but under the surface are a whole host of ideas which few others might have come up with. Blink and you miss them though, so read this slowly if you want it to outlast your coffee break.

4.0 out of 5 stars A primer for the uninitiated, 1 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Kurt Vonnegut had (it now transpires) wrongly informed us that "Timequake" was to be his last work of fiction.

When the great man says he has stopped serving meals we fans find nutrition even in just one bite.

This novella contains original work (although it has been broadcast in the States) and can be consumed at one sitting in c40 mins. It has all the hallmarks of KV and some of the old jokes eg "Isaac (Asimov) is in Heaven now" the remark with which he broke the Humanist conference into laughter after his succession to the presidency.

There is even a reference to the mythical MIT address when KV suggests we "wear sunscreen"!

I intend giving it as a gift to those who've not tried KV because it will make an ideal primer.
