Please don't be fooled by the purple cover and the sexist assertion that this is for girls only! My sons both absolutely loved this and both read it within two nights. They are aged seven and nine, so this book may well capture a wider audience than ten+ year olds. There are plenty of goblins and fairies to be going on with, but this is a refreshing change from the traditional fairy stories where the weak and needy woman waits to be rescued. Here, Sophie takes the lead. Therefore, it's a good story for girls in the sense that it teaches them that they can be the heroes of books as well as boys, but also good for lads who can learn the same thing!

A little gem- my children are already asking when the next one comes out!

Review by S Age 8 - This book is very funny.

My favorite part was when Sophie was shown The Shadow Files, Sophie wrote a joke and Grandpa Bob wrote `Not good enough Sophie' lol.

My favorite character is Sophie because she is fierce and won't back down. I didn't like her twin brother Anthony though; he is always mean to Sophie.

This book is great; it is exciting and full of adventure.

Review by A1 Age 10 - I think this book is amazing. I especially liked the part where Sophie became The Guardian.

My favorite character was Sophie, she seriously kicked some Goblin butt and she was never scared.

I didn't like Anthony, Sophie's twin brother; because he annoyed me almost as much as he annoyed Sophie, he was always boasting about the stuff he did with Grandpa Bob and what he had been given. I also didn't like Grandpa Bob as he never believed in Sophie just because she is a girl.

A great book for everyone to read

Review by Book Angel Emma Age 40 [ : D ] - Beautiful illustrations add to the dynamics of the plot.

Written in third person narrative but focalized from Sophie's perspective. Sophie has an incredible imagination, is a loyal and fierce friend to her best friend Sam. Sophie is a wonderful example that girls should not be dismissed as the `weaker sex' I was going to describe her as a tom-boy but didn't feel as if that would be a fair description; she is so much more than assigned gender roles. This point is eloquently asserted within the narrative. Sophie provides a brilliant role-model for girls today.

The best thing about this book, is that its main girl is not a passive girly girl. So it will appeal to the more tom boyish girl. However in its writing it is no better than the ubiquitous Fairy books. My own little girl was not that interested in it, preferring The faraway tree books. I also felt that the main character was both too good at things, being ace at Tae Kwon Do and skateboarding; but also somewhat stupid in giving away secrets to the enemy, and losing things.
Some girls might enjoy this book, but I don't think we will be buying the rest of the series, which is a pity.

If you want to switch on 8/9 year-olds to reading with a real adventure of the imagination this is the perfect series. We gave our grand-daughter the first two books and she disappeared for the rest of the day reading them; then she went instantly to the website to see when the next ones were coming. We then gave her the next two for her birthday and she ignored her other presents while she read them through cover to cover. I think the success of Sophie and the Shadow Woods is due to the perfect blend of real characters and fantastic adventures. Sophie and her friend Sam are a great team - and they have lots of fun - but there's also plenty of danger to give a child that shiver of excitement to enjoy. We're all now desperate for as many more in the series as we can have!

I enjoyed this book, i thought it was cute, i loved some of the little illustrations in it.

My 8 yr old niece however loved it, she said sophie was cool and kicked butt and is eagerly awaiting for me to buy her the next one in the series.

What i really liked about it however was that my niece hardly had to ask me what the words were and i think thats very important, too often authors write childrens books aimed at younger kids that they are unable to read themselves and they wont have any trouble with this at all which is brilliant.

Like another reviewer has said, its nice to see books for young girls that aren't all about fairys and princesses.

Keep them coming !!!

The heroine is a very up to date action girl who is into skateboarding and will be very familiar to any 8 year old such as my daughter. And the stories in this series should also probably appeal to boys as the subjects are not 'girly' and the heroine is very much an action girl.

Mixing goblins and other such creatures with a modern day heroine in an easily readable format made this a hit for both reading alone and bedtime storytelling.

The best compliment I can pay is that other books in this series are going to be ordered.
