About the Author
John Man is the author of Jungle Nomads of Ecuador, an account of an Amazonian Indian tribe with whom he lived for two years, and The Survival of Jan Little. His work in television includes a 6-part Channel 4 documentary on human endurance, and for Radio 4 he has made a series on survivors, the second part of which will be broadcast in 1996. He is married to the playwright, Timberlake Wertenbaker.

This is a good read, especially if you like your travel writing with a large dollop of authoritative background. However, John Man does go on a bit about dinosaurs towards the end. I think he got a bit carried away with the subject and it leaves the reader a little bewildered. Otherwise a great travel book.

The author's somewhat standard travelogue visit to Mongolia is escalated to excellence through two key things: the detail he provides about a little-documented country, and the insight that bridges Western concepts of society and natural beauty with those of Mongolia.
It may help a great deal to be interested in Mongolia or Central Asia before you pick up this book, but if you have even the slightest interest in the area Man will draw you in completely. While at first you might consider reading the book to learn about Mongolia without going there, Man paints in this blank corner of most people'e world view so well that you wish for much more contact with the country and its people.
