This book gives a structure for managing the goal attainment process in four main sections. 1: What is a goal? 2: Who sets goals? 3: How are goals set? 4: Achieving goals. The key message is that goals must be SMART if they are to be achieved.

I liked the clear structure of this 'work book'. The topic on goal motivation, identifying roles and needs was useful and enlightening. The structure also allows the opportunity to regularly monitor and evaluate where one is going with their goal (if anywhere!), this can be helpful as rarely do goals run a straight and simple course.

I didn't like the main emphaisis being undoubtedly on quantitively business orientated goal setting. This may turn some people off who are looking for personal goal setting that the reader wants to be inspired by and relate to. I for example, do not want to write myself a mission as I do not see myself as an 'organization'. Although the basic structure of the text is clear I noted an absence of a visual model to help me make overall sense of the goal setting process. I also felt that the Goal Action Forms afforded little room for writing, thus I had to adapt my own to give me more writing space.

Overall I feel this is a useful basic reference on the complex topic of goal attainment, particularly in business. However I find myself looking towards other texts for personal inspiration and examples I can relate to.
