Product Description

Review
On fictional terms this isn't as successful as most of Glanville's adult novels, sports and otherwise; but he's the official commentator on soccer, no longer an exclusively British sport, and there's some instruction all along the way. . . up for Ronnie who starts off on a London schoolboys' team and then is signed on as a full pro at 17 under manager "Dirty Macintosh." For some time he's just on the Reserve team; then he gets his chance at Liverpool, does well, then blows a game and is sent back - his interest in the sport and spirit just about eliminated - when Macintosh is removed and Ron goes back in the line-up for a fairly heroic showing. Goalkeepers aren's actually that "different" from other competitors (they need to be tough and confident) and Glanville's story doesn't rise much above a documentary of a player in action, so you'll just have to rely on a certain amount of professional savvy and facility. (Kirkus Reviews)

Product Description
A glimpse into the world of a professional footballer. The story follows Ronnie Blake, a rising young goalkeeper, in his career from apprentice through injury and rejection to making it to the first team and the thrill of running onto the pitch in front of a roaring Cup Final crowd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good pathfinding Soccer fiction, 30 Sep 2000
By padymurphy@aol.com (Belfast N. Ireland) - See all my reviews
I read this a year after Hornby's Fever Pitch, when I bought it thru Amazon. I had always meant to get the book when it was first Press reviewed but never got round to it. As a pathfinding Soccer novel it was great. Perhaps suffered from the writing by a good journalist who is not a great novellist, Glanville does capture some of the madness of a young man seduced and swept up in the 70s sports scene, and the smell of sport boardroom corrutpion and greed as well! But cf. to Hornby it's rather tame. I've passed it onto my young friend the N.Ireland TV comedian and Man Utd. fanantic Patrick Kielty so he can comment further.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the first books I read and re-read and re-read !, 3 Mar 1999
By A Customer
For a teenage boy obsessed with football this was a great read. A fantasy based around a young lad who is desparate to become a professional footballer. How he becomes a goalkeeper is in itself one of the pivotal points of the book and then how he goes on to play professionally against his heros is simply written but captivating. This is a bit dated now and I am not sure if today's generation of kids will be as enamoured with Peter Bonetti and co featuring in the book as I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, 3 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I first read this book as a teenager who had been enchanted by watching a FA Cup Final on TV with an uncle. But sports mania aside, this is a great book about what it is to be a sportsman, famous, and most of all what it means to be part of a team and yet apart from them. I don't particularly care for sport these days (blasphemy!!), but this is still one of my favourite books.
