Outdoors... 5 Dec 2013
By John B. Goode - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've tested quite a few of these USB speakers and this is how I feel:

1) Rugged, water resistant shell. With many of these speakers, you're afraid of taking them outside and banging them on rocks and stuff. With this one, you don't need to be afraid of that. I have not tried throwing water on it but apparently another reviewer says they're okay in the rain.
2) Nice pouch. You can zip up your mp3 player or phone in the pouch and don't need to worry about it getting wet or falling off. Very convenient.
3) Attached USB and 3.5mm cords, convenient.
4) Bungee cord for attachment. Again, very convenient. All this adds up to is a rugged outdoor set of speakers that can take a lot of abuse.

5) Sound quality. Fair for this type of speaker. I listened to a variety of music on these speakers to try them out. I thought sound quality was somewhat dependent on the tunes. On some tunes, I had harsh trebles but not on others, on some tunes I had strong bass, but not others. That can all be corrected from the mp3 player but in the end in the big outdoors, when I'm on my bike or hiking next to a creek, sound quality takes a back seat to convenience.
6) I daisy chained other small speakers I had to it and the ensemble actually sounded pretty good. Something I'd do for fun if travelling and don't have room for large speakers.

Summary:
Very convenient for outdoor activities: rugged, easy to carry and carries mp3 or phone inside pouch. Adequate sound quality for outdoors.

Okay but disappointing given the hype. 3 Dec 2013

I am running the speaker with a Samsung Galaxy S$. Even at top volume on both the speaker and phone, the output will adequately fill a pickup cab or closet sized area. Music and voice are clear but with very little bass had about the same volume or less than my $18 bluetooth speaker. I was not expecting it to fill a big room with sound or rock out a backyard bbq but I had hoped for more. I will give it three stars because it is as rugged as advertised and probabaly fits a niche in the range of low to medium output speakers.

Portable Speaker for Outdoor Use Such as When Biking or Hiking or Camping - Armored Protection with External Controls 29 Nov 2013
By ChristineMM - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We own two of the 90401 Goal Zero Rock Out Speakers (which are about half the price) and I am reviewing the 94005 and comparing the two.

This 94005 Black Rock Out 2 is an armored unit, it has support all around so if you drop it, it should be protected. They warn to be careful of your device, I assume they are saying don't throw the thing around with your iPhone inside it or the phone may get damaged (probably a liability waiver thing). So the 94005 is a bit heavier. The 90401 is like a soft box without any armor.

Both products have a zip line type cord so you may use a carabiner to hook it to a backpack if you are hiking or doing something active outdoors. It can be mounted to a bike's handles. The 90401 has a padded handle thing that hangs off the unit a bit, which the 94005 does not have. If you want to grab onto the unit you can put your hand around some of the flexible zip cord but it is not padded.

This 94005 unit has buttons on the front to pause and stop the music so you do not need to access your phone or device inside that stores your music. The 90401 requires that you open up the device and fast forward, skip or whatever from the device itself.

This 94005 unit has directional speakers so the music is best heard from the direction it is aimed directly at. If you are looking for a tabletop unit for indoor use I have heard better quality more surround sound type devices but they are four times the price of this unit.

All Rock Out speakers have the ability to hook up to other units so you can make a line of speakers to blast the music louder.

This is an inexpensive speaker system compared to others on the market but the sound quality is not on par, you get what you pay for. This is unique in that it is meant to be used outdoors when active such as when hiking or biking. Your device (ie iPhone or MP3 player) is protected inside in case the unit gets a bit wet or splashed by dirt or mud.

I rate this product 4 stars = I Like It. If the sound quality was a bit better and if it could sound as good when it is not aimed right at you I would have rated it 5 stars.

The Goal Zero RockOut 2 Portable Speaker A Vital Part Of Your Survival Gear! 17 Dec 2013
By Reuben Gathright - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Goal Zero 94005 Black Portable Speaker is a rare sign of brilliance in this era of weak electronics products. The portable speaker comes as a ready to operate, completely enclosed, black, thick mesh backed dual speaker system that can pump out the sound while running or biking in the great outdoors.
Using this portable speaker system is simple to do. Press the button next to the charge indicator and it comes to life broadcasting any audio source it is plugged into. The volume control buttons are easy to adjust but due to their position they cannot be accidentally adjusted while using this speaker system outdoors.

Discharge Testing:
Playing MP3 files from ASUS A4 netbook 100% audio out levels at approximately 50% volume on Rockout 2 with USB charge cable disconnected, the portable speaker system played for 45 hours! We also took this along to a McNeese State University tailgate party and the speakers kept playing all night long.

Recharge Testing:
You will find that it takes about 2.5 hours to fully recharge a Rockout 2. I also used the Goal Zero Nomad 7 Solar Panel to recharge these speakers and found it took almost 8 hours of full sunlight to charge this product.

The sound that comes out of these portable speakers is really impressive. With a full tailgate party the portable speakers worked just fine, making lots of sound. The flexible fabric on the back of the case give you plenty of attachment options as well. We placed the mini boom box and an MP3 player at the top of tent, hanging from a metal pole. I recommend this to hikers, campers or sports tailgate fans looking to hear their favorite tunes while at play!
