Given the Hero4 model has been out for a couple of months now, I’m guessing you’re looking at the 3+ because like me, you’re not sure whether to stump up the extra cash. I’m a self-confessed gadget geek and not going for the latest model normally doesn’t sit right with me. I only use the GoPro for filming so the still image quality was something of no concern to me. My main requirement was that the camera filmed in 1080 at either 30fps (frames per second) or 60fps to ensure I had a really good image. I also needed an external microphone jack so I could get good quality audio. The 3+ meets these requirements so that was my starting point.

Looking at the Hero4 Silver, the built-in touch display was no use to me, as the 3+ has wi-fi built-in – this means I can view the camera angle and change settings through the GoPro app on my iPhone. The Hero4 Silver also shoots in 4k, which if you’re wanting to future proof could mean it’s a smarter investment. But, I won’t be getting a 4k TV for a long time and decided I wasn’t willing to wait delaying the purchase of a GoPro until I get a 4k TV. Both the Hero4 Silver and Black have adjustable settings for ISO, exposure, colour and an improved processor, which for me was the biggest issue I had in choosing a 3+ over a Hero4.

I use my GoPro to film my car both inside and outside and that’s it. I don’t jump out of planes, ski, board, or any other wild activities. I’m also certainly not a professional and chances are would only end up making my videos look worse playing about with the adjustable settings on the Hero4. 1080 at 60fps is good enough for me was what I thought in the end. And I think I made the right decision. The Hero3+ is amazing in good lighting conditions and terrible in low light conditions. And I do mean terrible.

Everything about this Gopro is brilliant, except the battery life, luckily you can buy batteries for this really cheap so if you do run out you've got back up!

I had various issues with quality (first unit was replaced after 2 days), even at 1080P res images over 4 or 5 feet away are not sharp. Fine if you want to use close up all the while but I want to use for Track Days and once past the bonnet of the car you have a hard time to make out the plate numbers of other vehicles, it would have been much better if a variably focus option had been made available.

There are quite a few videos out there made by GoPro fans of the focus issue and how to fix it, I am very tempted and may well end up making the mod to the focus point to improve matters. I don't know if the Hero 4 range are any better, but I would say this camera has defiantly not lived up to the hype for me. The still shot quality is pretty poor but the burst rate and time lapse feature are pretty good.

I have had to add the BacPac to the camera as battery life is not brilliant, at least with the extra battery attached I can get 2 to 2.5 hours out of it. Something I would mention is that the lens area gets pretty hot when recording, apparently this is "normal" but it does feel weird. I used the WiFi app t control and setup the shots, the app is great but the preview mode does not always work and when it does it suffers for a delay of a few seconds, this is not that big a deal and playback from the camera to your mobile device is pretty good, the WiFI performance can be pretty shabby with some connections attempts taking a reboot of the camera and or phone to get it working.

You can tell this is a quality product, straight from taking it out of the box. Included is: the camera (all ready in it's waterproof case), sticky adhesive mounts, instructions, 3 way pivot mount and the box (which if you keep it acts as a flat board mount).
    Anyway, the camera:

The photo quality is excellent. Although it's a downgrade from the Hero3 (it used to be 11MP, it's not 10MP), you still receive very wide-angle shots in a resolution close to 4K. The 10fps in 1 second mode is helpful for photos. The only downside to photos is that you can't change the field of view, so it is impossible to take close up shots.

Video quality is good. Although it's maximum resolution is 1080p (I would have preferred 2.7K at a lower frame rate) it still does this at 60fps, and if you downgrade to 720p the camera can record 120fps which is decent for slow motion. There is a WVGA format option, where I think GoPro have made a design fault: The only reason why you would record in WVGA is to reduce file size - when you're recording hours of footage. However, the minimum frame rate on WVGA is 50fps, rendering it useless as this will use up memory about as much as 720p25. There is a loop record option on the camera which is useful, and numerous other settings such as spot meter... e.t.c.

The camera design is outstanding. It is TINY! All of the controls can be operated within the waterproof housing, and wifi mode is useful when you need a viewfinder. The camera certainly feels like a quality product.

The waterproof case design, I think, is not good. I much prefer the HERO3 design, as the latch on the new one feels very small and flimsy. However, I have had no problems yet, and I think it is just the design GoPro have gone for.
