4.0 out of 5 stars A success, 17 Dec 2007
By Antonio Moncayo (Zaragoza) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This EP is the third album by the successful cornish fusion band.
Drawing influences from nearly everywhere ( Celtic, Balkan, Gypsy, Latino, Dance, Dub, Punk, Reggae and Folk )they sound mostly Celt and melodic, better listened in a pub with a pint of bitter.

The best song is the uplifting Go tell the Bees , perhaps with a different production would have made it to the charts ( but I don't think that is what they wanted ).

I hope they can produce a full album of the same quality.

Well done

4.0 out of 5 stars Different & Great!, 8 Nov 2007

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
The fusion of this band is incredible; I really want to get my hands on more material! The first song "Go Tell the Bees" is a mixture of great big choruses that remind me of the pop songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but the sound has nothing to do with them! It is modern, melodic, string-based and acoustic... but always with a street flavor on their songs.
The last song of the album (Astral Eyes) mix rock vocal melodies with awesome flute passages!

This was my first exposure to this band and definitely will not be the last!

I can't wait to hear the new album!

Let the music play!

4.0 out of 5 stars Spirited and entertaining, must see live!, 5 Nov 2007
By Mark R. Bannister (London, England) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
In an era where self-made hard working bands of talented musicians seems unfashionable, in favour of the "get famous quick" fluff of the modern pop idiom, 3 Daft Monkeys emerge with their fresh and energetic style, a band I had previously not heard anything about.

This EP showcases four songs in recordings that make you want to see the Cornish band live. They are clearly talented musicians, and the mix of folk guitar, violin, strong rhythms and funky bass lines give the band an entertaining and compelling voice. Their lyrics are clever and witty at times, and not always obvious, so require close scrutiny.

Go Tell the Bees is a successful fusion between old and new musical styles. Their use of instruments with a strong root to the folk songs of the past will appeal to anyone with a love of celtic music. The hard work invested and experience gained from many years of touring live, and their injection of musical influences from the streets of Europe and beyond, are what makes this group stand out as something special.

This EP reminds me of the debut album from The Corrs, who unfortunately lost their celtic influences in later albums as they drove to become more commercially acceptable (or "watered down for the masses"). Go Tell The Bees is not pop music by any stretch of the imagination, and long may it remain so! The first three tracks are taken from their forthcoming album Social Vertigo, scheduled for release in early 2008. But not wanting to wait that long, this EP has encouraged me to purchase Hubbadillia, the album from which the fourth track was taken. I'm now eagerly awaiting the postman!

Average musicianship, child-like lyrics. Good rollicking music but ultimately forgetable.

Try something like Devotchka instead

2.0 out of 5 stars So this is folk, is it?
This fierce collection of four songs is a love-it-or-hate-it affair. It's loud and rather earnest - not what might be expected of so-called "folk music". Read more
