Product Description

BBC Review

Authenticity is an important part of music these days. Artists need to be believable, transparent, and real. Austin resident Ben Kweller is surely as real as they come. Having signed his first record deal at the rather intimidating age of 15, the now-30-year-old singer has spent over half his life creating and performing. On new album Go Fly a Kite, his fifth solo release and the first on his newly created The Noise Company label, Kweller is the epitome of an honest character; pretence free and unashamedly wearing his influences on his sleeve. However, despite all that surrounds it, there’s something quite disappointing about this record.

Go Fly a Kite feels like music by numbers. Everything here is satisfactory: the production is glossy, the songs are eloquently constructed with choruses that swell from verses that tell us tales from Kweller’s life. Yet there’s a missing flare, an absent moment, which if present might make you feel this album was written with open eyes. It’s not groundbreaking, and it’s not that interesting.

Lead single Jealous Girl has all the immediacy of a familiar friend, but the lyrics are lazy and cliché. "Jealous girl what have you done / I won’t live in a jealous world with anyone," drawls Kweller with no little predictability. Elsewhere, The Rainbow feels like Ben Folds writing for Yo Gabba Gabba!, while Gossip is just Dylan by beginners.

However, Kweller’s ability to write a melody that catches from the first play still stands throughout the body of Go Fly a Kite. His choruses soar and sweeten any sourness that’s bred from crass lyricism, while his words feel like their being sung from the bottom of his heart. But for all the glorious Tom Petty moments, it’s a record that has followed its influences rather than built on them.

For long-time fans of Kweller, this album will represent familiar fare, but for new listeners it’s not the most recommended of entry points. Resting on laurels may please some, but in a period where established artists need to make their most exciting and progressive music yet to stand out, just being oneself isn’t always good enough.

Absolutely Stunning 23 May 2012
Format:Audio CD
My form at school will attest to my questionable taste in music, but this album is a work of art. On first listen I heard the sound I have come to expect from Ben Kweller, but there's so much more to this album. I was disappointed with 'Changing Horses,' perhaps it's just not my kind of music. 'Go Fly a Kite' takes the country elements and mixes them perfectly with the more pop-rock style of the first three albums. In short, after regular listening, this album will reveal its true form.

Genius at work 18 April 2012

Ben Kweller returns to form after his country album with a album packed with melody that in a just world would see him playing stadiums though will almost certainly remain under the radar of most, leaving this musical genius to carry on producing his brilliantly written and played gems for the lucky few who have stumbled across him.

Ive been playing this album constantly over the past few days & i love it! It was definitely worth the wait! Ben has made some of my fave music & this is as enjoyable as anything else he has put out.All tracks are so catchy & varied, opener 'free'is an old skool 70s rocker,'mean to me' has a great 80s style chorus, theres country tracks like 'out the door'(my fave on the album)'full circle',aswell as Bens usual ballads & rock/pop sing-a-longs such as'jealous girl' which has similar stylings of earlier track 'penny on the train track'.I cant wait to finally get a 'physical' copy of this & cant wait see him on tour again!!
