Review

Chris Pitt's work is without a doubt one of the more charming additions to the racing library in the last few years as he delves deep into every Grand National staged since the Second World War. --sportinglife.com

There's hope for everybody in this winner of a book. --Racing Post

This book is a riveting read, one that I found hard to put down. The stories will appear to many, hard-bitten National Hunt fans, horse lovers and those just looking for a good read about sport. --theracingforum.co.uk

Product Description

The magnetic appeal of the Grand National - by those who didn't win it ... and one who did. Every year there is one Grand National-winning jockey and 39 who tried but failed to win the world's most famous horse race. Some fell at the first fence. Others were beaten a whisker in a heart-stopping finish. But every rider who has ever taken on the fearsome Grand National fences has his, and her, unique memories of one the greatest challenges in sport. In Go Down to the Beaten racing historian Chris Pitt distils the magic of the Grand National through the eyes of jockeys who, for one reason or another, did not reach the personal and professional pinnacle which the National represents, finishing with Tony McCoy, who famously won the 2010 race at his 15th attempt. In doing so, Pitt presents a unique angle - inspirational, moving and frequently funny on the greatest race of all. Foreword by Grand National winning jockey Bob Champion.

Racing is about so much more than the winners. It is about the riders, the racecourses and the horses. Wonderful beautiful horses and their riders. The title is taken from the John Masefield poem.

As one who has heard and seen more Grand Nationals than I'd care to admit, this is the story told by the riders of horses that never quite won possibly the greatest race in the world. It is an achievement to have been able to catch all of these riders still living to get their first hand stories. Horses mentioned bring back memories of winners as well as famous losers. Of both a more and a less innocent time, but memories of the best horses in the world.

A good Christmas present for any racing aficionado, who watches racing for the sheer love of it. Leave the flat for the gamblers. This is for the racing people. Of horses that threw their hearts over the Brook.

A good coffee table book that allows a look at some of the more interesting stories from the National. The British public loves a trier more than a winner at times, so this should appeal.

Love this book. Written by someone who really cares about the people & horses involved in Aintree's Grand National. Each chapter contains history, insight & the excitement this race evokes.
