Both my boys love this book! This book is complete genius as it teaches your child prepositions such as over, under, on, at etc... in such a fun way. It has a couple of fun threads running through the book to maintain interest which includes dogs in cars heading towards a dog party and one dog trying on different hats to impress another dog. The illustrations are old and the red colour looks more like orange. But it makes up for this in written content. This is not a conventional story book and at first glance it seems to jump around but i think it adds to the interest. I love reading this with my boys and they enjoy trying to read it. This is the second time i've bought this book as the other got so tatty from constant handling.

I remember loving this book as a kid, but even then I recognized one thing about it. Rereading it as an adult, I am still surprised by something.

The book pretty much lacks a plot. Yes, there are a couple of recurring bits, but almost every page until the end is separate from what went before.

However, the book has simple sentences and simple vocabulary. And the pictures that go along with the text are fun. Maybe it's the fun of the story that appeals to kids and still appeals to adults. Or maybe it's just the dogs in every day activities that works well.

Whatever the case, I definitely do recommend this book for kids. It's a picture book classic and sure to entertain kids for generations to come.

This is a simple, formulaic, colourful, lively book with pictures of dogs in funny situations and straightforward text underneath. Although designed for early readers the text can be guessed from the pictures so that little ones can 'read' a book on their own.

The plot, which there isn't much of, involves whether one dog likes the hat of another.

This is a book to encourage small children to take first steps in analysing images and, perhaps with reading. It's not one to snuggle down with for a good story. That said, it does its job!
