From the Inside Flap

‘Come on in, the water’s lovely,’ says alternative business guru Geoff Burch, who walked out of a top level corporate job 20 years ago without looking back. After years of doing his own thing and ‘loving every mad, scheming, wheely–popping, money–spinning second of it’, Burch shares his insider’s knowledge of how to make a success of working for yourself. Go it Alone is an indispensable guide for the downsized and the downshifted, budding entrepreneurs, and anyone who wants to get of the rat race, whether they want to generate a modest freelance income or launch a global corporation. Learn: Why self–employment is the securest form of employment. Which businesses are doomed and which will succeed, and how to make sure you choose the right one. That you are working even when lying on a beach. How to put on a show that makes even simple or cheap, easy tasks seem difficult and expensive. That the way to happiness is to make your own money and control your destiny. The secret of glorious and heroic failure, and how to avoid it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most impactful book I've ever read... 2 Dec 2004
By kabo
Format:Paperback
I read a borrowed copy of this book back in 1997 when I was just 19 and it changed my life! Seriously, some of the many insights, such as, "You'll never be unemployed when you're self-employed - you may be broke - but never unemployed!", in this book have made a profound difference on how I've 'made my living' since.
There's no doubt that reading this book gave me the confidence to just go it alone and make my own way in the world! I left my job as an underpaid graphic designer and started my own business thanks to this book. It should be required reading for anyone just about leave school or college!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant 16 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
So glad to see this book available again.. it's fantastic, and held my hand when I set up in business
Geoff's wisdom, enthusiasm and humour shine through on every page - and what really marks this book out is its down-to-earth quality - all that stuff about really examining your motives for wanting to be self-employed, the emphasis on keeping your costs down so you don't end up with huge loans, the stuff about making your business stand out... -it's all so true, true, true...
He also emphasises that it's not easy, and it's not for everyone.. there's a quote about how..'if you set up your own business, in a few years time you will be a different person' - well, I did and I am (better organised, more self-disciplined, more realistic, more thick-skinned)
But five years on I've also got a really nice life doing something I love and earning a very good living. I could never go back to being an employee.
Thanks Geoff!

If you are just about to embark on a new enterprise, or are thinking of setting up your own business, and you're sick of the usual, tame and un-original "business" books, trying to cash in on the latest "buzzwords" and trends, then this is the book for you.
Geoff Burch is a trainer, consultant and lecturer to the world's major blue-chip companies and has been called "an alternative business guru" and "the rebel with a cause". He is (in)famous for riding onto the stage on one of his huge motorcycles and for his hard hitting and practical approach to business success.
His sense of humour and fanatical passion for sales and marketing comes across beautifully in this book. His anecdotes and good advice will instil confidence in anyone; you just know that his ideas are going to work.
Although this book is entertaining, it certainly wasn't written just to entertain. Geoff's favourite saying taken from John Cleese (Monty Python) is, "You don't have to be sombre to be serious", This book is easy to read and will change your attitude towards business and marketing forever.

I've been self-employed for about 3 years now, but this book has been a revelation. I wish I'd found it earlier. It's really helped me get to grips with selling and changed my attitude toward it completely. If you're thinking of setting up on your own or have just done so, buy this book and read it as soon as you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Streetwise 16 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I picked up this book whilst idly browsing one day - boy am I glad I did! It's witty, humorous and anecdotal. It won't tell you the ins and outs of being self-employed but it will tell you what it's like. Thoroughly recommended.
