Book Description

Statistical data is only as valuable as your ability to analyze, interpret, and present it in a meaningful way. Gnuplot is the most widely used program to plot and visualize data for Unix/Linux systems and it is also popular for Windows and the Mac. It's open-source (as in free!), actively maintained, stable, and mature. It can deal with arbitrarily large data sets and is capable of producing high-quality, publication-ready graphics.

So far, the only comprehensive documentation available about gnuplot is the online reference documentation, which makes it both hard to get started and almost impossible to get a complete overview over all of its features. If you've never tried gnuplot "or have found it tough to get your arms around "read on.

Gnuplot in Action is the first comprehensive introduction to gnuplot "from the basics to the power features and beyond. Besides providing a tutorial on gnuplot itself, it demonstrates how to apply and use gnuplot to extract intelligence from data. Particular attention is paid to tricky or poorly-explained areas. You will learn how to apply gnuplot to actual data analysis problems. This book looks at different types of graphs that can be generated with gnuplot and will discuss when and how to use them to extract actual information from data.

One of gnuplot's main advantages is that it requires no programming skills nor knowledge of advanced mathematical or statistical concepts. Gnuplot in Action assumes you have no previous knowledge of either gnuplot or statistics and data analysis. The books starts out with basic gnuplot concepts, then describes in depth how to get a graph ready for final presentation and to make it look "just right" by including arrows, labels, and other decorations.

Next the book looks at advanced concepts, such as multi-dimensional graphs and false-color plots "powerful features for special purposes. The author also describes advanced applications of gnuplot, such as how to script gnuplot so that it can run unattended as a batch job, and how to call gnuplot from within a CGI script to generate graphics for dynamic websites on demand.

Gnuplot in Action makes gnuplot easy for anyone who needs to do data analysis, but doesn't have an education in analytical tools and methods. It's perfect for DBAs, programmers, and performance engineers; business analysts and MBAs; and Six-Sigma Black Belts, and process engineers.

What's Inside:

  • Creating graphs with gnuplot
  • Data transformations and filters
  • Preparing/polishing graphs for final presentation
  • Publishing graphs in print or on the Web
  • Using gnuplot's power features
  • Gnuplot scripting and programming
  • Types of graphs and when to use them
  • Techniques of graphical analysis
  • How to build, install, and develop for gnuplot
  • Command and Option reference organized by concept

Purchase of the print book comes with an offer of a free PDF, ePub, and Kindle eBook from Manning. Also available is all code from the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book 6 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a well written and informative book and I would recommend it both as a beginners guide to gnuplot and as a reference text to dip into for the more experienced user. The book is well laid out I was able to get up and running with gnuplot from scratch very quickly simply by progressing through the chapters in order.

gnuplot has so many features that a completely comprehensive book would have had to be a much larger text. So whilst the book won't tell you how to do everything, I feel that it gets the balance right and is the perfect book to get you started. Advanced topics are well covered too, but for real 'power-users' there are a large selection of demo scripts available on-line that you can navigate for yourself once this book has taught you all the basics.

If you need to use gnuplot, this book is money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely book though needs to be extended 27 July 2010
Format:Paperback
great book. explains everything slowly (perhaps too slowly for some). v. good quick-lookup section in the back. would be great if the book was bulkier though, going into scripting more than it does. havn't finished it, but as far as i'm aware it doesn't mention plotting from SQL databases, which may be an important feature for some.

3.0 out of 5 stars Waiting 30 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
Just want to know honestly when this book will be published! I bought this book in January 2009 and was expecting to receive it on the end of February 2009 as was mentioned on this page! but then got an email from Amazon saying the publisher is not ready yet to publish this book and there is another delay till end of March 2009. Now, I received an email from amazon saying there might be another delay! in Amazon.com, the publishing date is April 2009. Can someone say when EXACTLY this book will be publish please? Thanks! I am in an urgent need to have this book.

I would not have bought this book in Jan 2009 and would not wait and make my research based on GUNPlot unless I was expecting to receive it by the end of Fab 2009. If you are not ready to publish it, and if you are going to make a monthly delay, please be honest and say it so that I can cancel my order and change my research direction.
