By Chuck E VINE™ VOICE
For some reason,George Crumb has not been recognised as one of the contemporary greats. His music skilfully and effortlessly blends harsh, unforgiving and highly dissonant sounds and/or effects with beautiful melodies built around the ideas of strikingly attractive, earlier-classical chordal ideas. Not only is the music wonderful to listen to, it also stunningly written out. Anyone who has seen the score will truthfully tell you that before being told it was written out by hand, they would have sworn it was printed. It is Crumb's such close attention to detail that makes his music as powerful and moving as it is. People have been known to buy the hand-written scores just to frame and hang up! "Dark Angels" is one of more well known, yet still ridiculously underestimated pieces of Crumb's-written for an electric string quartet, yet it sounds like an entire orchestra. I highly recommend this as well-not for those with weak hearts!
