Product Description

Product Description

Gluten-free cooking does not have to be laborious and disappointing. There are delicious dishes for all the family and for all occasions, as well as tips on what to avoid, where to look out for hidden gluten, and how to eat naturally gluten-free food. With recipes, such as Lamb and Lime Burgers with Peanut Sauce, Crunchy Polenta Fish Cakes, and Chocolate and Cherry Torte, gluten-free doesn't have to mean pleasure-free. The book is divided into main meals, side dishes, baking and desserts. Baked goods are the most obvious source of gluten, so we have dedicated a whole section containing many useful recipes to help you find that elusive taste and texture that can be absent from gluten-free cooking. After trying a few of these delicious recipes, you won't even remember that you are eating gluten-free.

I bought this during a book-buying spree (in the old Simpsons of Picadilly shop - dare not mention the competitor here!). It was only when I started reading it once I got home that I realised that I had only paid £4.99 for it - full price.
I have several gluten-free cookbooks but most, dare I say, are a bit like early vegetarian books were - a bit beige in outlook. This is supmtuous. On each opening there is one well written recipe and one beautiful photo worthy of top food magazines. Some are variations on well loved recipes, many are more exotic. What sold it to me was the Christmas cake, dripping with glazed fruits and nuts. This is a book you could really use often. Hardback, it is a nice enough book to give as a present.
It has a 4-page opening section on being gluten-free, with an excellent list of things to avoid. This book does not purport to provide any diagnostic advice, but, of all the gluten-free books I have, (and I am the coeliac), if I had a coeliac child who was going to stay with granny, this is a superb book for granny to work from.

This book is totally uninspiring. It has a whole chapter on pasta which contains basic pasta sauce recipes with "gluten free pasta" as an ingredient. Well, yes, I could have used any recipe book and worked that out, thanks.

Worse, though, it's also got a glaring error in one of the recipes where it tells you to use soy sauce but doesn't specify tamari or gluten free soy sauce. Seasoned Coeliacs will know that soy sauce contains wheat, but if a well-meaning friend or relative or a gluten-free newbie buys this book they won't and will end up glutened or giving their guest a glutening. There may be other similar mistakes - I haven't bothered to look as the book has been put to the back of the bookshelf where it'll be staying.

Gluten-fee cookery 7 Jun 2009

This is without doubt the best cook-book for coeliacs, and the receipes are also easily adaptable for vegetarians and vegans.
We can recommend the book most highly - excellent value, and really gets one in the mood to cook.
