Amazon.co.uk Review

Since the 80s, scientists have studied blood sugar responses to hundreds of different foods on people with diabetes. These foods have been ranked according to whether they raised blood sugar levels dramatically, moderately or just a little. Known as the glycaemic index (or the GI factor), this research has turned some widely held conceptions inside out.

It was found that many taboo foods (such as those high in sugar) don't necessarily have the detrimental effect on a person's diabetes that was traditionally thought. In fact, carbohydrate foods that break down slowly into the bloodstream, and therefore release glucose gradually, actually help diabetics to control their all-important blood sugar levels. Although a pocket book, this guide is fat with information and facts that dispel the myths about what diabetics should and shouldn't eat.--Christopher Kelly

Product Description

This pocket guide gives you the true story about carbohydrate and the blood sugar connection. Health authorities everywhere stress the importance of high carbohydrate diets for good health and diabetes management. But which type of carbohydrate is best for people with diabetes? Here it's revealed that:

- Many 'taboo' foods don't cause the unfavourable effect on blood sugar they were believed to have.

- Diets with a low G.I. improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes.

- Many more foods make up a healthy diet for someone with diabetes than was once believed.

With G.I., fat and carbohydrate content tables of over 300 foods, the pocket guide can be used when shopping, dining out or planning the week's meals.

It Works! 24 Sep 2002

With the help of this little book, I was able to reduce my blood glucose from an average 9.5 mmol/l to an average 6.2 mmol/l. Further, the peaks and troughs of my blood glucose have been smoothed out, and it's those peaks which do the damage with diabetes complications. The information in this book is concise, easily understood and there's lots of it. If there were 10 stars, I'd give it 10 but I have to settle for 5. My advice to anyone with diabetes or looking after someone with diabetes is buy it!

By A Customer
A remarkably useful guide packed with down-to-earth information and advice. Blows away so many misconceptions about diet and diabetes. While I am not a diabetic, I do suffer from hypoglycemic episodes; this book has cleared up much confusion regarding what is and isn't likely to be good for me. The list of 300 commonly found British foodstuffs, many by brand name, is a godsend.

Great book 7 Jan 2012
A must have for people with diabetes but also for those who wish to rid themselves of those thick midriffs! It is a well written easy to understand book, gives ideas for low GI meals, handy size book to slip into pockets or handbags as a reminder of what not to eat. Thoroughly recommend this.
