It's a flash, so it flashes when required; so far so good. The instruction book states that it is possible to turn off the hard bright red AF assist light. This is not possible in auto focus mode. The AF assist light is only required when shooting in dim conditions. In the words of the instruction book "This light may disturb people who are being photographed". When shooting people in normal light conditions I have resorted to a lump of Blu-Tac to obscure it, not what you would expect from a £130 flash.
