First impressions of this book - from the cover art and the blurb on the back cover - are not good. The cover art by Jim Gurney is similar to that of Josh Kirby on Pratchett's covers, only not as good, and the blurb makes it sound like just a bad comedy of one-dimensional automatons. So it's a good thing that the book was free froma fellow Bookmooch and user I didn't see it before requesting it.

Right from the start, there are at least two Real Characters, plus a couple who are, if a bit stereotyped, are at least three dimensional. Incidental characters who pop up later are also reasonably well-drawn. The plot is, of course, absurd. We knew that from the cover art, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that doesn't really matter. The comedy is primarily in observing the characters, and I recommend it as a bit of light reading. Don't expect actual quality, but it is at least a quick and entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun romp 7 Sep 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When punk rocker Seeth rescues someone from arrest at the local bowling alley, it all seems like a harmless lark. But, when the cops turn out to be murderous aliens, Seeth and the bookworm Kerwin soon find themselves running for their lives. Accidentally picking up airhead style-queen Miranda, they set off for the stars on the adventure of a lifetime!

This is quite a fun little book. Shift your brain into neutral and suspend your disbelief as you will quickly find a universe filled with extremely odd creatures doing extremely odd things, while the situation becomes odder and odder. I mean, this is not Isaac Asimov teaching a lesson, instead this book is a fun romp through all sorts of strange adventures. By the way, did you realize that the most important thing in the universe is shopping? Well, get this book and learn more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and age-spanning 2 Jun 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I first read Glory Lane about five or six years ago and then resurrected it for my teen-age son. This book has become one of the few books that he and I both liked immensly. That the action takes place in our hometown makes it more fun than ever. Every aspect of it is believable. Assuming that aliens exist, every part of this adventure could actually happen. This is what makes it great. You can take this leap into fantasy, knowing that it could become a reality.
