Book Description

An enlightening account of the FA Premier League's eventful first twenty years

Product Description

The FA Premier League was born 20 years ago, on 23 September 1991, and has since established itself as the most popular club competition in world football. At the start, however, there was opposition from the players’ union and the Football League. Then the breakaway elite were faced with the exposure of the game’s ‘bungs’ culture, which stained the reputations of Brian Clough and George Graham, among others. After weathering that storm, the new league was threatened again by the very real possibility of financial meltdown, which was averted only by the controversial takeover of many top clubs by predatory overseas owners. Joe Lovejoy reported on the creation of the Premier League for The Independent and revisits the story in Glory, Goals and Greed, interviewing many of the ‘founding fathers’. Later, as chief football correspondent at the Sunday Times, he witnessed all the main events and has spoken again to those involved to shed new light on the best matches, best players and standout incidents of the Premier League’s enthralling first 20 years.

Joe Lovejoy brings the Premier League into focus across its twenty years. He addresses all the major points of those years with good interviews with key personnel. Unfortunately, he shows a massive bias against the most successful team of that period - Manchester United. For example; where he suggest matches of those 20 years, it's MUFC's largest defeats that get mentioned, although he does fill the book with other MUFC discussions; the 20 headline makers are mostly based around sad MUFC tales. If he is an MUFC supporter he's completed quite an injustice to balance the books, so to speak.

What he does well is introduces subjects we've all talked about for 20 years with some good back up material. It's almost as good as his 'Bestie' book onBestie: A Portrait Of A Legend George Best, but not quite.

Very bad. 28 Oct 2011

This book reminds me of a lot of other English sports books. It's not very well written and it relies on horrid interviews. You can probably get a better sense of history of the premier League by reading it's entry on Wikipedia than by reading this book. I can't stress enough just how awful the interviews are. If listening to barely literate people go around in circles, this is the book for you.
