Product Description

A riveting novel of friendship, adventure and love against the odds, set in the early days of flight in Prohibition-era America.

Abe Rockwell and Willard T. Thornton are famous fighter pilots together in World War I. Willard returns to a hero’s welcome in America and launches a film career. Abe just wants to fly – and he has no rich family to support him.

When he crash lands in small-town Georgia, the locals recognise Abe and appeal to him for help. Alcohol-smuggling gangsters are trying to oust them from their own homes. But Abe can’t see that his one patched-up aircraft can make much difference.

Slowly, a plan forms and Abe needs help himself. Enter another tremendously skilled pilot – but it’s a woman. Abe doesn’t want to take her on, but she’s the best there is and brave with it. Neither of them can predict exactly what they’ve let themselves in for.

Willard, meanwhile, forsakes films for banking and rises fast – only to uncover some very dodgy business at the core of the company. He’d like to turn a blind eye but eventually he’s in so deep that he can’t. The firm is under serious threat, from a devious and resourceful attacker. Which is when Willard realises who it must be, and how he’s going to have to team up with someone he’d always overlooked.

I must confess I am a huge Harry Bingham fan, my only problem being that he writes too slowly for my liking. Glory Boys is fantastically good, a tremendous read which destroyed my life from the moment I picked it up because for the next few days I could do little else except read it. If I remembered to eat or sleep I was lucky.
It's really gripping but also has strong and vivid characters and a great setting. The two pilots, Abe and Willard, have been fighter Aces together in the first world war, but arrive back in America not really knowing how to handle their new hero status. The book at its core is about the making of real heroes, not just the kind who shoot down planes, however serious that may be, but also the ones who learn to do the right thing in the face of on-going difficulty or even in the face of dissaproval from others.
Along the way, there are fantastic scenes involving those beautiful old bi-planes and lots about the early history of aviation. And the female character, Pen, (short for Penelope)is another really strong theme. I can imagine this would be a book to sell your soul for if you were a fan of planes and aviation in general, because I was not when I started but ended up being one; it just makes you fall in love with the skies and the whole beauty and bravery of it.
Overall a really great thriller that transported me to another world. Great title too which sums it up nicely; Glory Boys.

strangely fantastic 20 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
I put off reading this book, (despite reading his previous books which I enjoyed) simply because the synopsis did absolutely nothing for me and the book kept getting pushed to the bottom of my to be read list. If anyone reading this has done the same or are put off buying it because the synopsis doesnt tickle their fancy then I hope you change your mind as you are missing out on a great book.

I finally got around to reading it and it had me hooked from the start. The storyline is unique and gripping and the characters are very strong and endearing.

It was not a book that appealed initially but I enjoyed it immensely.
