The American Civil War does not interest me at all but this movie has made me think twice. It is a deep and thoughtful film based on a real life negro (54th) regiment.

It tracks the regiments formation and struggle to be deemed equal to other white regiments. Unlike other race related movies this one touching and non forceful and at times you feel a deep sympathy for the troops and the officers (white) commanding the regiment.

In all it includes hope, courage and truth. Bonuses on the DVD include well made documentaries on the 54th and directors/actors comments.

This movie is in my 10 all time movies and I highly recomend it.

Having recently watched Gods & Generals and Gettysburg its' sequel, every so often a really "special" film comes along and for me this is it - the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the first Black regiment to fight for the Union side against the Confederacy of the Southern States. Matthew Broderick plays the charismatic Robert Gould Shaw from a Bostonian family of abolitionists who rises to the rank of Colonel, who sees the racism against the black men who are even initially denied proper footwear, uniforms and arms because their role is seen more as that of labourers than fighting men. He also sees the crimes of theft by his superiors. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman play 2 of the enlisted men. Washingtons attempt to find himself some boots at a nearby farm result in him being whipped for desertion.Washington hates almost everyone, accusing his fellow blacks of being cheap Confederate targets when they initially accept an offer of less wages ($10pm)from the War Department instead of the $13 that had originally been offered and agreed to for all soldiers, Black or White. At this the Colonel declines to accept wages for everyone, officers included.Colonel Shaw has to blackmail a Battalion Commander into using the 54th in actual fighting and they bloody their noses at James Island but not without losses. Morgan Freeman who plays the much more sensible, older man role to which he has been accustomed lectures Washington on his hot-headed ways and at last appears to make Washington realise where he has gone wrong and to channel any hatred he has against the enemy not his fellows. Col.Shaw who is ably supported by a child-hood friend Maj.... Read more ›

Id just like to say i am only 13 and i watched this film in a history lesson as we are learning about the civil war in America and, it was absolutly amazing. How one man gave his life to Black race touched me in such a way that by the end of the film i was crying. Id reccomend it to any one who really appreciates a true, patriotic film. It really puts things into perspective to you. Thank you x

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Story Told in Some Style. 30 Mar 2011
By Bob Salter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I cannot believe that this fine film made over twenty years ago has simply passed me by. I have never seen it and did not even know of it's existence until I stumbled across it on Amazon and read all the positive reviews. But lots of positive reviews does not always mean a good film, but it certainly did on this occasion. I do not normally bother to review a film that has already been reviewed by so many, but feel that I should make an exception on this occasion.

The story is about the all black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, who were lead by Col Robert Gould Shaw, the son of a wealthy Boston abolitionist. Shaw wrote over 200 letters to family and friends many of which are kept in the Houghton Library at Harvard. These letters formed the inspiration for books about the 54th and later this film. In a nutshell we witness how these soldiers are denied the courtesies and privaleges allowed their white counterparts, simply due to their colour. All this despite the fact that the war was being fought on their behalf. We then follow the regiment into battle as they distinguish themselves in bitter fighting, culminating in their heroic charge against the heavily fortified Confederate stronghold of Fort Wagner.

Firstly I must say how refreshing it was to see such authentic looking period detail. Many of the soldiers displayed the beards and moustaches so favoured in that period. Matthew Broderick who took the lead role, managed to look uncannily like Shaw. The costumes and battle scenes are entirely convincing, despite lacking the technical wizardry they have at their disposal today. Civil war buffs must surely have been rubbing their hands with glee. This is definitely the most realistic, and also happens to be the best Civil war film I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional Education 14 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
This was the first film I ever purchased (aged 15). It is difficult to believe such a heroic story occurred. What is even more amazing is when you view the "true story" in the extras.

Those brave men of the 54th who refused pay and demanded action that would endanger their lives provides a sterling example of bravery and commitment to freedom.

This film is filled with exemplary performances such as an early Denzel Washington's rebel, Morgan Freeman's war weary experienced determination, Matthew Broderick's idealistic uncompromising commitment and an unsung angst ridden performance by Cary Elwes that transforms us to a time rife with inspirational moments and examples of self sacrifice.
