I was disapointed with Nigel Foster's Sea Kayaking. I missed details on what he was talking about. The pictures was sometimes good but somtimes lacking detail as well. And the text didn't refer to the pictures explicit hand book style. I think there must be better books for the intermediate sea kayaker then this one.

Derek Hutchinson's guide to Expedition Sea Kayaking is a useful and informative read. The book breaks each subject chapter into brief sections,covering subjects such as equipment, rescues, navigation and camping. Many sections are however very short and could do with references for further reading. Hutchinson shows his years of experience with advice on a wide range of exotic hazards, from icebergs to alligators. He also keeps a good balance for both British and North American paddlers. Clearly illustated and comprehensive, I would recommend it to someone new to the sport or going on their first extended trip. A good first reference book.

I found this an excellent introduction to kayaking, the sections on tides and navigation being the most useful. The worked examples explain the impact of tides on currents and how to plan your trips.
It is let down by the picture quality and it could be improved by adding more diagrams to explain paddle strokes.That said there are plenty of DVDs and books to cover these in detail.
