Housier instalment of the great Global Underground series, 5 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Global Underground compilations are renowned for their quality, focusing mainly on progressive house and trance. This is a retrospective of Darren Emersons recent sets in Singapore, and has a very upbeat, housey feel to it. I wouldn't say that one CD was a warm up and the other a late-night session as is so common with 2CD comps, but that both could be listened to in one session as a fantastic set. It isn't the best global underground (see Seaman in Buenos Aires, or Sasha in Ibiza), and personally I don't feel that it is as good as the recent Global Underground Nu-Breed CDs (check out Anthony Pappa and Danny Howells), but if you're looking for a quality house CD and don't want any cheese, then buy this. I'm expecting this to be the sound of Ibiza, rather than the cheesy whistle bol**cks you get on most comps out this time of year!! Oh yeah, and personally I think its loads better than his last GU comp.

Underworld King Keeps it Funky!, 10 Jul 2001
Emerson's new Global Underground is another sublimly crafted offering from the ex-underworld DJ. The GU series always features the world's best DJ's and producers but, I feel they can sometimes be a bit stagnant, the DJ's demonstrating their obvious skill on the dex but the sets can lack soul when the whole focus is on technical excellence. Emerson, however keeps it fresh and funky, bouncing through cool, bass heavy house and some brilliant electro, showing us both his DJ skill and his love for great house music. Both CD's sound original and innovative, the mixes are spontaneous but still keep that 'seamless' quality associated with top-class DJs. If you're into the GU series, then this album is a must, it is certainly as good as his last GU album and it rates alongside Danny Tenaglia in London and the Anthony Pappa Nu Breed album as the best CDs in the Global Underground collection so far (in my opinion of course!)

A new great trip to the ultraworld from Darren Emerson, 21 Jul 2001
Emerson is back again with a very similar mix to his first one in this series, GU015 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. In this one you'll find all the ingredients to enjoy what I think all the mix albums from Darren have: funky, industrial, disco and dub wild house tracks from now and then that are always "smooth like silk" combined. In my opinion it's a privilege to enjoy the mixing of Darren Emerson and John Digweed live. I guess the best mix album by Darren up to date is Cream Separates 01 (1997). Anyway, I like all he's done in his solo dj career. CD1 is a perfect combination of sounds of the early 90's and this late 2001 disco oddisey: the great "hablando" from Ramirez (I think is a tribute from Darren to a song that could be the early disco track that inspired Azzido da Bass to throw all over the world the 1999 hit "dooms night", something Norman Cook did as well with "star 69") to the martian "spaced invader" (which has obviously a similar style to "dooms night"). Other moments in CD1 are "do you like the way..." from A2 and "purple" from Circulation. I prefer CD2: it's close to a good chill out mix. And it's done with a good transition from chilling good songs to some more bouncing last ones, like the euphoric classic "voices" from KC Flight. Part 1 is a relaxing modern house travel from "magenta" with Circulation, going through the magic piano solo of "man from solaris" and the lyrical and balearic "lifetimes" from Slam. And is a very personal election from Emerson; if you think you will find all the hits from "Eibiffa" or "Top of the pops" in the tele, or any of those "As seen on tv" sticks some may like, forget about it, mate!
