This was one of Darren Emerson's first ventures after leaving Underworld and it is superb.

I bought this at the time and have listened to it regularly over the last 13 or so years. It has funk, dark house, techno and a range of classic tracks that you look back over now and realise this was put together to stand the test of time. Even now it doesn't sound like the year 2000!!

CD1 - This is probably the slightly harder and techier of the 2 discs. It starts funky with the great track from The Orb. It quickly develops into a much harder sound though, very much old school techno.

It carries on in this vein - including great, classic tracks from Trevor Rockliffe and Chaser - until Bert Dunk's "Groove Y'all" kicks in. This lightens the mood well. This is followed by a duo of more great uplifting tracks which maintain that dark edge.

CD1 ends with another couple of classics. Dave Angel is an absolute god within the Techno world and his track here "Rematch" is outstanding. This is followed by Ron Trent's "Altered States". Fantastic way to end this first disc!

CD2 is a little lighter throughout but still keeps the dark twisted beats from disc 1. In fact the very first track is one of the very best on this double disc set. Paul Jacobs's "Soul Grabber - part 3" is simply brilliant. Dark, driving, melodic, funky, gripping but most of all it simply wants to make you get up and dance.

Disc 2 also contains offerings from Aaron Carl - if you know anything about him you'll know the type of track to expect with some very typical haunting and catchy vocals. We also have "French Kiss" - I'm sure you've heard this little tease of a track before. It simply adds a little raunch.

I haven't listened to all of Emerson's releases, but I have owned this CD, GU 20 and GU36 for a few years and have also listened to a few of the Underwater label releases. These mixes have it all... house, funk, tech, progressive, tribal, soul and a lot of love, passion and skill. These cd's are not for the faint hearted and each mix is skilfully crafted to build up to a full on club mix. My favourite genre of music is jazzy house so it is a biased opinion when I say that Emerson is my favourite DJ as his style combines a lot of the elements that I love. I would listen to Disk 2 GU 20 Singapore at any time of the day ( one of my favourite releases ever ) but if you are looking for something to put on at a party, believe me... this mix will keep even the most demanding listeners entertained so long as you get the timing right. And when anyone asks 'What kind of music is this?'... the answer is simple.... It's Emerson!!!

Continuing in the same vein as the other pedigree mixes in the series, cd1 in this package is an absloute belter. For those who remember dancing to the Orb's funkier tracks at the start of the last decade, you'll go mad for this as they kick off the track listing. The baselines are chunky and, if you're looking for something to get you in the mood for a massive night out, you'll not be dissapointed.
Essential record.

Not a CD for a handbag anthem lover, but definitely one for people appreciative of Dance and it's many variations. Another excellent CD from the Global underground team. But who will it be next?

Sadly Darren Emerson's contribution to the GU series is to bring the overall IQ level down. This release just floats amid the detritus of average mix albums that achieve nothing and end up fetching mere pennies second hand. Still, it makes other releases in the series look magnificent.
