Product Description

From Amazon.com

Sasha and his fellow turntable conspirators John Digweed and Paul Oakenfeld have been on impressive winning streaks since the mid- to late '90s, particularly with their increasingly popular and influential Global Underground series. This addition to the cycle, a live set recorded in the Spanish dance-music haven Ibiza, comes close to setting a new standard. Sasha is working solo here, and in addition to showing off his prodigious live mixing skills and inventive use of source material, he also creates an undeniable identity for himself. Digweed accomplished the same thing last year with the masterful Bedrock, but where that record was elegantly light and airy, this one burns with a sharper, more manic energy. Throwing out resolute rhythms and melting house samples bathed in dreamy backdrops, Sasha cuts through dense structures and clever transitions with superhuman alacrity. It does take him a little while, as his use of trance-inducing repetition strays a bit while he establishes a groove on the first disc. Disc 2, however, simply tears into an incredibly danceable vibe. Mixing together melodic snippets and varying moods, from the dark trance of "Fibonacci Sequence" to the ecstatic release of "Xpander" (from his EP of the same name), Sasha mainlines rhythm and creativity through to a satisfyingly exhausted conclusion. --Matthew Cooke

Tunes are immense, mixing is even better. If the global underground boys are to be believed this was recorded live - which makes it particularly amazing that it is almost impossible to spot when the next tune comes in! sasha was on top form when this was recorded and although a couple of years old now I still play it more than any other compilation CD I own. 1999 was the definitive year for trance and the tunes selected simply dont age. A CD which brings back many great memories and is the best album in the global underground series. Top stuff!

Stunning 22 May 2003
Format:Audio CD
This album is nothing short of stunning and I am still listening to it years later. I'm writing this review just to point out that, although Sasha is the undisputable king, this was definitely not mixed live. The discs are based on sets that were played at a club in Ibiza (I think Space) and then the actual mix CDs were done in the studio using pro-tools and a number of other technologies. Doing it this way is a time consuming process but the end result, as you can see, is nothing short of phenomenal. Sasha's mixing is, in my opinion, better than anyone else's but there's no DJ in the world that could have done this live. I think all of the GU series of CDs were done in the studio and based on sets that were played live. I have first hand experience of this from being at the recording party for GU19 at the Mayan in Los Angeles back in October 2000. This is probably the best mix CD ever made and the majority of the tunes are timeless classics that are still very sought after.

just simply sublime 12 July 2004

I read some of the reviews here about this CD and I have to say bought it on the strength of these reviews. What is clear to me, is that disc 1 is definately the best trance CD i've ever heard (disc 2 being darker/faster, still good but prefer disc 1). the mixing is out of this world. I have sadly never made it to Ibiza, but there must have been some awesome nights at Space with this guy at the decks...Sasha is truly the boss!

I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is up there among the best GU releases. I prefer this over the San Fransisco GU mix from Sasha. Read more
