Product Description

Review

"We have long needed a new introduction to international political economy, and John Ravenhill pulls together some of the best people in the field to provide it. Ravenhill's book covers all the bases: contemporary theory, first-rate introductions to particular issue areas such as trade and finance, and an extended debate on globalization that reflects a variety of perspectives. A first-rate text."-- Stephan Haggard, Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, University of California, San Diego
"Global Political Economy is a comprehensive and well-organized volume featuring contributions on the major issues of global political economy by leading experts. A notable viture of this volume is its combination of intellectual sophistication and accessibility. I can enthusiastically recommend Global Political Economy for advanced undergraduate courses such as the one I teach at Duke on transnational relations and political economy."-- Robert O. Keohane, James B. Duk --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This books provides a good introduction to many aspects of political economy. Having read the book at university, I found that it was a medium difficulty-level book.

However, the authors of the different chapters are very different in their style of writing and their focus in their chapters, and this is both good and bad: good in the way that many different aspects are included; many of the authors are respected meaning that their writing can be found elsewhere in a course programme literature list.

But it also makes the book a little weak, as some of the chapters are over the mark of the general difficulty level of the book, and some below; many things are repeated (the creation of the Bretton Woods system is re-read countless times); and some of the authors do not live up to the standard of the others.

In conclusion, the book provides a good general insight into the workings and creation of today's political economy, but other readings should be studied for a broader view.

This book provides not just a great broad view of how the politics of economics works but it also deepens one's appreciation of the webs and intricacies of global politics. When our countries sign up to global initiatives we don't realize how tightly our leaders tie our hands. We may not have a choice about that if we want the world to work together. Anyway, Ravenhill is not a rollover for globalization. He sounds like a good guy and his book is very much worth reading (I read the second edition). It's so much better than what we read in most newspapers and on most blogs.

Informative if basic 20 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This book gives a fairly comprehesive and informative view of global political economy.

This said - it's not very conservative with regard to the number of words used to make a point & it doesn't go very indepth or much beyond the fairly basic aspects

If you're looking for a book to explain the more political aspects of the economy then by all means go for this - it will do it, but only relatively superficially.

If you'd rather learn more about the economic system and then work out the political side on your own / from other materials - then get something more focused on the economic side - particularly the history over the theory.
