And what should change in our behaviour. But it also sounds like a dream of a white christmas.
Although, already for hundreds or thousands of years people think the world is going to an end.

Seeing the current state of humanity as a culture in its adolescence, with an unsustainable growth spurt fueled by oil, the author suggests that we are entering a planetary initiation into our future adulthood as a species. This initiation is brought on by the challenges of our time: global warming, resource depletion, economic instability, political unrest, new technologies, and the chaos of a dynamic system breaking through a deterministic paradigm.
This transition could also be called a shift in organizing principles for society - from one based on the love of power to one based on the power of love.
A former psychologist and author of many books on the chakra system, the author looks at the culture through many lenses: as a psychotherapist, historian, mythologist and mystic. Quite a combo. She sees various stages of our social history as reflecting humanity's infancy, toddlerhood, middle childhood (filled with sibling rivalry) and now in the midst of our full-fledge adolescence, transitioning into adults both in terms of our power ("more power in the hands of individuals than ever before") and in terms of general literacy, education, sophistication, access to the internet, ability to collaborate and organize, and the spiritual growth movement.
Her tour through human history is riveting--not a story of battles and dates, but a story of what happened to the feminine and why, both the light and dark side of Christianity (hard to find in one volume) and the blessings and costs of science and industrialism, emerging into the 60's revolution of human rights and the emerging interest in consciousness.
Where we are going, she suggests, is toward an emerging era of the heart--whose outer attributes are peace, collaboration, new economies, green technologies, participatory democracy, and spiritual awakening.
An inspiring and hopeful book that isn't "airy-fairy," yet has distinct spiritual dimensions. If you are a big-picture thinker, the insights in this book will expand your viewpoint.
Anodea Judith has a grasp of history, mythology, psychology and spirituality that is unmatched. She will take you on a journey that will be challenging, awakening, satisfying and motivating. The most effective personal choices and the actions with the most impact arise from those who understand our times, both the grand sweep and the immediate choices and opportunities that are right in front of us every day. Anodea is on target and with great heart.
Reading this book will put your feet on the ground, awaken your vision and put your heart in the right place.
This is the most interesting and readable book about history - and our future - I've ever read. In fact, prior to reading it, I hadn't understood the larger patterns of our growth and development as a species. She weaves a fascinating story with her eloquent, thoughtful voice. Not "His-story," as we've been taught in school, but OUR story. When we look back, we can see where we've come from. Then, she turns our attention toward our future, showing us that we have a choice, right now, and that our choices will lead us either into a glorious future (if we can open our hearts to each other and to the planet), or to more death and destruction if we do not. Although it sounds alarming, alarms are important if you're trying to wake up in time.
In her previous works, she looked at psychological development, and personal growth, through the lens of the Chakra System, a map to wholeness. In this book, she uses that lens again to examine the development of human civilization. Because she is also a brilliant psychotherapist, it's as if she has Western Civilization itself on the psych couch. She is trying to make sense of the source of his wounds and his bizarre, violent behavior by examining his past. Once the source of his neuroses is understood, she offers a cure -- a Rite of Passage that he must go through, and decisions he must make (we must make), in order to turn from a mixed-up, selfish and dangerous teenager into a whole-hearted, healed and awakened adult. Tribal cultures knew how to take their children and turn them into functioning adults. We seem to have lost that knowledge, so we've remained a civilization obsessed by teenage manias. She declares in no uncertain terms: It's time to grow up. I've heard that "GOD" stands for Grow Or Die. This is our moment to choose.
I strongly recommend reading this book if you want an optimistic and hopeful narrative about human nature, the multiple crises we face, and the possible glorious future we could create easily. If you want to understand how we got into the mess we're in, and how we can get out of it, read this book. It provides a hopeful look at our future, but it is clear that our time to wake up - into the heart - is now.
Anodea Judith's psychological perspective on humanity's development as a species and as a global society was a fresh take on the human condition. How we have developed to the crisis point we are at now is laid out clearly in this book, along with much hope being offered as well. The author takes a larger perspective of humanity's evolution, and consequently has a more positive perspective, than someone who chooses not to see the bigger picture, which is that humanity is clearly on the Hero's Journey. She believes that we are not only undergoing a personal initiation and transformation but a collective one as well. We are leaving the Underworld and are now coming back to our world to share our gifts, our hard-won strength, and wisdom.
"This is our emerging myth: We are here to first realize and then restore the divinity of ourselves, each other, and the world. We are evolving into gods and goddesses to work in partnership, with the task of co-creating a divine future--a future whose purpose is to create heaven on earth through the universal organizing principle of love." In order to evolve past our third chakra love of power, we must develop our fourth chakra, our heart-center, and harness the power of love.
By understanding our past, our collective history, humanity can better stand together in love to write a different story (the human story), a peaceful, joyous, compassionate, and cooperative future for ourselves and Earth, realizing our full potential as co-creator gods and goddesses. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand and empathize with humanity a little more, as we each go through this collective initiation process together.
