You don't need to know that
The Glitterati's debut album was recorded by Guns N'Roses producer Mike Clink to know this young Leeds quintet are aiming high--it's all spelt out in frontman Nic Denson's lyrics to "Back in Power", in huge neon letters: "I want a filmstar/ I'm on the guestlist/I want a sex life/I want a death wish!" he yelps, visions of guitar-shaped swimming pools crystallising in his mind's eye.
But while The Glitterati isn't quite as monolithically big-sounding as, say, Appetite For Destruction naturally, in Axl's hands, token slowies "Don't Do Romance" and "Keep Me Up All Night" would be accompanied by a full orchestra numbers like "First Floor" strain with a glossy, solo-strewn libido reminiscent of early Aerosmith in their sleazy enthusiasm for hard rock's more ludicrous trappings. If you're looking for Darkness-style tongue-in-cheek, you've come to the wrong place: Denson's yelp of "See you later/ Heartbreaker!" appears to be played entirely without irony. But that's not to say The Glitterati isn't enjoyable--it's just that they're serious about having fun, and if that involves Flying V guitars and a spot of back-combing, all the better --Louis Pattison
