4.0 out of 5 stars A combat robot, Max, shows signs of malfunction... 15 Sept. 2014
By YeahYeahNoh TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a short story in the Kindle Singles range, and as such the story is, as you would hopefully anticipate, short.
It tells the story of an estranged couple, part of a team who have built a robot which competes in battles (advanced Robot Wars if you like, for those old enough to remember it). Max, the Robot, has just come through the semi-final of the tournament, and the whole team are likely to make their fortunes if only he can win the final. But, there's a glitch...
It's a brilliant little story - compelling and somehow containing much more than it's short length suggests.
The ending works, but somehow I felt there could be more to this - a longer story in waiting. Brilliant as it was though!

I love this short (and I don't usually buy short-stories). The characters are fleshed out, the pace is spot-on, and then there's Max... Well, Max should be a combat robot, but this day, he has other ideas and they're all his own. Great little read.

A nice story but far too short - unsatisfying and ended just when it felt it was starting, more like a preview excerpt. But what was there was very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars HUGH! Please Tell Me This Is Becoming A "Long Story"! 9 July 2014
By David Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow! What a great read! The premise was brilliant and when it was over I found myself thrilled and frustrated at the same time. Thrilled at the story and frustrated at the fact it was over. Howey does an amazing job of using 5,000 words to take you to a place of total immersion. But then he "pulls the plug" (read the story). Please Hugh, give us 500 more pages. I want to get to know Max that much and more.

Get this story! You'll never enjoy $0.99 more!

5.0 out of 5 stars This could be the beginning of something great! 8 July 2014
By David T - Published on Amazon.com

This is a short story, but it could also be the launch of a new series. Lots of potential here.Howey should pick it up and run with it, like Sand or Wool. It was a quick read over lunch, then it was over. Kept me longing for more.

I have not yet been disappointed by Hugh Howey's work. He has become one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing as always! 4 July 2014

Hugh Howey is a mastermind. The only negative thing I have to say about this story is I wish it were longer, I couldn't get enough of it! I can't wait to see what Mr. Howey comes up with next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a glitch, or was it something more? 21 July 2014
By J. Chambers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Samantha and Peter were counting on their robot, Max, to win the Gladiator Nationals. After years of work, a win would earn them the military contracts that would make their careers. But something was wrong - Max was misbehaving. Was it a hardware glitch, or was there an error buried in the millions of lines of software code? Or was it something else - was Max exhibiting characteristics of human intelligence and self will?

It's not clear if the author meant for "Glitch" to be a one-off story or if it's an introduction to Max the robot and his creators, with more to come, but the story has the potential to be the basis for a novel or a series of stories in the manner of Isaac Asimov's classic "I, Robot."

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice short story from the author of Wool 10 July 2014

Excellent short story. No spoilers here. This is a true short story, not a prequel to something bigger. At least, I think that's true, but who really knows in the long run?
