My ancestors on my mother's side lived at Lynn in the latter part of the 19th century. I had filled in all the boxes - names, births, marriages, deaths, etc - but had no feeling for the lives that they must have lived.
Then I came across 'Glimpses of Fiddaman's Lynn'. None of my ancestors featured in the storyline but I finished the book with a wonderful appreciation of what life must have been like in those times - often tough but with surprising opportunities for entertainment.
In summary an immensely enjoyable and carefully researched history of everyday life in a Norfolk market town and seaport towards the end of Victoria's reign.
