Easy Action Records UK have taken 5 years to compile 5 cds worth of unreleased material and other rarities by one of the most important bands in rock history. Its hard to believe Easy Action got such access to The Yardbirds recorded history. Only the 1968 studio recordings and the Anderson Theatre recordings are missing here. The folks at the label warned that the sound is not audiophile quality. True, but the sound is not bad at all. Some recordings sound better than others, but taken as a whole the sound quality is good at worst. The interview interludes are not terribly intrusive although they occasionally mask the sound of the band. Many pluses here. The bands three distinct incarnations are well represented here. The Clapton era is pretty well covered on disc one, and the early BBC Radio One recordings located on disc five. Discs 2 and 3 are mainly vintage Beck years. Incredible stuff!! Absolutely stunning. Some recordings are not from pristine masters, but get at the real sound of The Yardbirds live with Beck at the helm. Likewise there are newly remastered BBC One tracks on disc five. Then comes disc four, the Page years. With no access to the recordings mentioned earlier, the recordings with Page are less vital and perhaps the least interesting on the set, which is saying quite a lot. Perhaps to put it in perspective discs one and four, the Clapton and Page years are a bit less interesting than the Beck years on discs two and three, but everything found here is not only essential listening but an absolute must documenting the five year tenure of one of the most important bands in the annals of rock music history. My hats off to Easy Action Records UK and to the members of The Yardbirds who worked so hard to make this project come to fruition. Absolutely essential for fans of 60s music, especially those into guitar driven rock of the period.

This new box-release with legendary Yardbirds gives a very thorough insight into the group's musical development, and particularly in what the group stood for as a live-band. The vast majority of the many tracks over five CDs are live recordings from various places in the world, covering all periods of the group - from the early Clapton years till the Led Zeppelin transition period with Jimmy Page.

Besides the many live recordings there are exciting alternative takes , among others, "He's Always There", "Turn Into Earth" and "I Can't Make Your Way". Of regular studiorecordings there are only a few. Many BBC recordings are actually studio recordings in fine sound. Among these it is especially interesting to hear "The Sun is Shining," "Dust My Broom," "Most Likely You Go Your Way" and "My Baby" songs that the group never officially released. Also interesting to hear how songs such as. "I'm a Man" changed character over the years.

For me the most exciting periods around 1966 when the group was inspired by the psychedelic wave and also the period with Jimmy Page, which ultimately led to the formation of Led Zeppelin. Interesting to hear how much "Led Zeppelin" there actually is in several of the last Yardbirds recordings. You may also note that Keith Relf on several of these later track sounds somewhat uninspired, and his performances on "Dazed and Confused" can in no way match those with Robert Plant.

The release is primarily aimed for incarnate Yardbirds fans, but is obviously worthwhile for fans of the three great guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

The accompanying book contains many rare photos and a brief biography of the group. I would have liked that there had been a clearer overview of the box, because, even though it is mostly built up chronologically it can be a little tricky to get a quick overview on where each specific track comes from. This is only a minor objection. It should also be noted that there are many interesting interviews with band-members throughout the five CDs

I will now hope that there will be another box that takes focus group's studio recordings.

hidden gems 12 Dec 2011

This is a reasonable priced set which is not just for hardcore fans. The omission of the the last five studio tracks from 1968 is regrettable but sadly understandable. There is quite a bit of material that has been available for some time but a great deal is totally new. The most important is at last some live Jeff Beck tracks. The Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page eras have been represented live in the past but at long last a chance to hear the classic tracks performed with Jeff Beck. There are some other gems, the unreleased live version of "Think about it" despite the quality of sound is quite remarkable.

Well worth buying the skip button might be needed very occassionally
