This is an interesting historical compilation of the Beethoven five, by Gould and other important conductors, including Stokowski.

The first and the fourth concertos have an excellent open sound but the second has a terrible mono-can-like sound that ruins the record.

The third and fifth are good but more on the slow side.

Gould's playing is crisp and sincronic.

All in all a nice pack, if you're a historical Gould fan and enjoy Beethoven.

As usual, 23 May 2013

Gould delivers. Gould is always necessary in any repertoire he recorded, in my opinion. Even if he does not, with his often, eh, eccentric choices in interpretation deliver the most pleasing all around performance he helps the listener "hear" the pieces anew. That means when you go back and listen to another performance more on the "normal" side you will hear things with a fresh approach.

"We Exaggerate the Protagonist's Role in Concerto's" 7 Sep 2014

Repackaged yet again, these recordings are must have's for admirers of Glenn Gould. During his concert performing years, Gould played all five of the Beethoven concerto's many times. I would recommend these recordings to any admirer of this music in general.
Vladimir Golschmann and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra are wonderful in the 1st concerto. Tempo's are brisk and robust in the allegro's while they slow down very nicely for the 2nd movement Largo. The cadenza of the 1st movement is written by Gould and it is a contrapuntal, Bach meets Beethoven marvel. It's worth the price of the set alone to listen to GG play so freely.
The 2nd concerto was a favorite of Gould's. It is a mono recording with Leonard Bernstein and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.
The sound is a bit dry. All concerned play wonderfully. If the listener does not mind a good mono sound it will not be an obstacle in order to recognize it for the great performance that it is.
The C minor #3 is very good. Gould is less heavy handed than the likes of Arrau or Ashkenazy. The slow movement is very special and by the 3rd movement the listener is convinced that Gould can do no wrong, regardless of how he approaches his part. Bernstein and the Columbia SO provide solid support.
The 4th concerto is led by Bernstein, this time with the New York Philharmonic. Gould plays lyrically and is the perfect foil for Bernstein's dramatic orchestral accompaniment.
The 5th concerto is led by Leopold Stokowski with his own American Symphony Orchestra. Gould went way out of his way to make this collaboration possible and Stokowski, at the age of 83, was more than happy to participate under the condition that he could use his own orchestra. It is one of the great performances of the Emperor. Gould is Gould from the get go. The concerto builds and builds in greatness as it go's along. There are some slightly off horn intonations in the first movement. They are overcome by what is simply a glorious interpretation of this bastion of the concerto repertoire.
What can I add? Do you want to hear one of the greatest pianist's in the LVB PC's? Look no further. It has never been more affordable and rewarding.

I have loved the performances of Glenn Gould for over fifty years. The production quality of these CD's is excellent and more than matches that of my worn out LP's.
